Dr. Bernadette Ardelli aims to help Brandon University faculty and students reach new heights in research and grant offerings when she fills the shoes of vice president of research and graduate studies in January.
Ardelli has been the Dean of Science at BU for the last five years and has been a champion in forwarding science-based research projects. Ardelli says she is looking forward to taking this expanded role and collaborating with more university departments to facilitate more faculty and student success.
“It’s sort of helping people with whatever they may need – expanding their research, be it getting funding, space, access to resources, trainees,” Ardelli said.

She said she has “big sky” goals for her tenure and is excited to make new inroads in the departments of research and graduate studies.
“I hope to help improve our research presence because we do a lot of great things here at Brandon University. But it’s not always easy to get that message out there. We’re all pretty busy. I tell people, we have to do all the same things here at a small university than they do at large universities – we just have to make these things happen with a lot less. And we do quite well,” Ardelli said.
Ardelli has been with BU for 17 years. She says advocacy will be an important part of her new role.
“I find that maybe there’s a bit of … misconception about what we do here at the university … perhaps because we tend to be a little bit quiet. But there’s a lot of really great research going on here that goes on throughout the year,” she said. “There’s just a lot of really neat things (happening). And so, I hope to be able to tell the broader community more about what that is.”
Ardelli said she is going to encourage growth of BU researchers by having their research promoted and published. She also said she thinks events are a great way for the Brandon community to discover what researchers are up to. On the graduate side, Ardelli said she is looking to find more grants for students to continue in their studies at BU or other universities.
“I will just be helping them with those portfolios, helping the instructors, the supervisors, but also the students as well,” Ardelli said. “I also will be helping students become competitive for scholarships beyond our university.”
