The Brandon School Division board of trustees once again has a full slate. Kirk Carr and Lorraine McConnell, who were elected in the BSD byelection on Oct. 25, were sworn in as new trustees during a special meeting at the school division office on Monday evening.

BSD secretary-treasurer Denis Labossiere led the short ceremony, during which both Carr and McConnell pledged to perform and fulfil the duties of the office of the school trustees to the best of their abilities. Both were elected to fill vacancies on the school board — Carr in Ward 1 and McConnell in Ward 2.

Both McConnell and Carr said they are looking forward to listening and learning at the first few meetings, especially when the trustees start to look at the school year budget for 2024-25.

“I’m looking forward to getting past the current issues that seem to be taken up all the time. And moving on. We’re already starting the budget process. There’s a lot of work that needs to get done on that budget,” Carr said.

McConnell, an executive director of an early learning facility, said she is hoping that her experience will help her learn about the school board budget.

“I’ve been doing budgets with a lot of constraints for a long time. So I just I like working with numbers because I like kind of seeing how I can get the most out of what there is,” McConnell said. “I’m not going to even begin to think that I’m going to have any magic answers, but I’m really looking forward to learning about it.
