FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Motor Vehicle Branch and Highway Traffic and Motor Transport Board offices will move from 1328 Rosser Ave. to the new provincial office building at 340 Ninth St.
A combined corporate and employee donation from Western Manitoba Broadcasters Ltd. has pushed the United Appeal campaign past the $100,000 mark, leaving $55,000 to be raised.
The new Santa Claus parade route straight along Victoria Avenue from First Street to 18th Street was lined with hundreds of children and adults.

A paid leave of absence for Harold Perkins was worked out at a meeting between lawyers for the president of Brandon University and the university.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Mayor Rick Borotsik made children’s entertainer Joey Gregorash an honorary citizen of the city. Gregorash performed at Shoppers Mall to kick-start the Christmas season.
Eight first-year Brandon University students have been named recipients of Canada Scholarships for 1993-94. They are: Rupal Benning, Marcia Coueslan, Ryan Hehn, Charlene Howell, Janell Kopecky and Breanna Pugh, all of Brandon; Cory Hrubeniuk of Rossburn; and Wayne McDonald of Cartwright.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Anger that comes with bitter defeat was on the faces and in the voices of parents of Fleming School students as they left last night’s Brandon school board meeting. Trustees rejected 7-2 a motion that was seen as Fleming’s last chance to avoid closure, effectively sealing the school’s fate. The school board passed a motion at its July 14 meeting to review Fleming School for closure effective June 30, 2005, thereby sending Fleming students to Earl Oxford school in September 2005.
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine became the 60th member of the Order of Manitoba yesterday.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats gained few extra fairweather fans in Brandon last night as the Ontario team went head to head with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 101st Grey Cup game. Some Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans pledged a one-night-only allegiance to the underdog Ticats in hopes their Saskatchewan rivals would crack under the pressure of a home-turf advantage. The Riders went on to beat the Ticats 45-23.
A breakdown has closed the Sportsplex pool, and although the city’s not yet sure exactly how long repairs will take, they expect it to be closed for the duration of this week. The main line on the pool tank experienced a mechanical breakdown early Sunday morning, and the pool had to be completely drained, the city said in a press release. A damage assessment was to be conducted later Sunday and city workers should be able to start repair as soon as they know what they’re dealing with.
