Even in the most tense situations, the Brandon University Bobcats appear in their comfort zone.
They were the better team in the dying minutes of yet another Canada West men’s basketball game, closing an 85-74 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans on a 12-3 run at the Healthy Living Centre on Friday.
Khari Ojeda-Harvey led the charge, coming off a Canada West player-of-the-week-worthy doubleheader against Calgary. The fourth-year from Queens, N.Y., dropped 23 points with eight in the fourth quarter to lift BU to 6-1 and drop TWU to 1-4.

A pair of teams that like to play fast did a good job slowing each other down in the first quarter.
The Bobcats went just 1-for-8 from three-point range while the Spartans hit three of seven in a 19-19 deadlock through 10 minutes.
Brandon found its legs in the second quarter, running and creating transition layups and open looks. Khari Ojeda-Harvey hit three threes in the first five minutes of the frame to pull ahead 37-25.
Brandon stayed up by double-digits until settling for a few mid-range jumpers while letting TWU walk to the rim for easy buckets.
Josh Belvin hit a pair of threes early in the third as the Spartans roared back. They tied it 50-50 and took the lead with less than four minutes remaining in the quarter.
The slow, sluggish ball from early in the game continued to the tune of a 57-57 tie entering the fourth.
The back-and-forth battle continued and it stayed a one-possession game until Ojeda-Harvey hit threes on consecutive possessions to lead 71-66 with 4:30 to go.
Sultan Bhatti drew a double-team and dished to Blake Magnusson for an and-one, then Bhatti collected a rebound and scored on the other end to lead 78-71 with 1:41 remaining. After a TWU timeout, Bhatti drilled a three to get to 18 points on the night and all but ice the game.
In the women’s game, Trinity Western won 111-58.
The Spartans (5-0) didn’t miss in the first five minutes of the game, going 10-for-10 from the floor to open up a 21-3 lead.
The Bobcats (0-7) narrowed the deficit over the next five minutes as the Spartans got 11 players on the floor. Reetta Tulkki led the charge as BU made it 30-16 after the first quarter.
Brandon continued the charge with a 10-2 run to open the second quarter, cutting it to 32-26. That was as close as Brandon would come. It gave the 10 points right back as Jayden Gill popped off with eight second-quarter points.
Gill put the Spartans up 59-38 at the break and was far from done there.
She had 12 points in the first half and added 12 more in the third quarter, leading one more TWU surge to pull away and lead 83-47 entering the fourth quarter.
The Spartans continued their onslaught in the fourth, adding 28 more points and limiting the Bobcats to 12.
Gill finished with a game-high 30 points while Tulkki led BU with 18.
The teams meet again today, with the women tipping off at 5 p.m., and men following at 7 o’clock.
BU VOLLEYBALL: The Bobcat women’s volleyball team (0-9) fared no better in Winnipeg, falling 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-13) to the Wesmen (2-7).
Selva Planincic recorded 17 kills error-free on 25 attempts for Winnipeg while Brandon collectively had 15 kills and 21 errors.
Ava Pearson was BU’s leading scorer with four kills, three errors, an ace and nine digs.
The men’s match was in progress at deadline.
ACC VOLLEYBALL: Kylee Peake hammered home 16 kills and four aces as the Assiniboine Community College Cougars beat the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers 3-2 (25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10) in Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference women’s volleyball action at ACC on Friday.
The Cougars improved to 4-2, dropping the Blazers to 2-4. In the men’s match, CMU (6-0) won 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21). Zane Dyck had nine kills with Noah Barcellona adding eight for the Cougars (3-3).
The teams meet again today, with the women starting at noon and the men at 2 p.m.
