BRANDON UNIVERSITY

The BU Big Band will celebrate the end of the fall term with a short concert on Tuesday, featuring the repertoire they have been working on. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, and will include works by Count Basie, Don Menza, Bob Mintzer, Bob Brookmeyer and Bill Holman. Two BU small jazz ensembles — Church and Geese? and Jeremy & the 4 Non Blondes — will also perform. Admission is free.

Megan Hadley will discuss the impact of trauma resiliency training in youth mental health services on Wednesday. The online talk, which is part of the Faculty of Health Studies and Centre for Critical Studies of Rural Mental Health Seminar Series, will take place from noon to 1 p.m.. In commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, a special screening of the film “Polytechnique” will be held on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at the Evans Theatre. The event is being organized by BU’s Status of Women Review Committee and is open to the public. Admission is free, and donations for the Women’s Resource Centre will be accepted.

The Indigenous Peoples’ Centre will hold its Christmas Feast and Potluck on Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m., in He Oyate Tawapi (Ceremony Room). For more information, email RobertsonR@BrandonU.ca.

First-year students will present their research topics in this week’s Science Seminar Series event on Friday at 1 p.m., in Room 4-47 of the Brodie building. The short talks will take place throughout the afternoon, with topics including breast cancer, plastic waste and peatland restoration. The talks will also be available online. The BU Brass Ensemble Christmas Concert will take place on Friday at 7 p.m., at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. There is no admission charge.

After running out of money while backpacking in the Australian outback, two friends resort to a working holiday in Royal Hotel, showing this weekend at the Evans Theatre. Show times are at 7:30 p.m,. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and admission is $6.

Friday is the last day of courses for most programs for the fall term. Exams begin on Saturday and run until Wednesday, Dec. 20. Brandon University will be closed for the holiday break from Dec. 25 through Jan. 1.

ASSINIBOINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

It is Storytelling Week at Assiniboine. Are you interested in hearing poignant, personal journey stories or those that have been passed down generation after generation? Each day, elders and speakers will share stories from their personal lives and nations. Learn how they got to where they are today and the roots of stories and their significance. Join us in person December 4-8, for this special series!

Hosting a holiday event is a time-honoured tradition at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts. The historic building is decked out for the holidays and the ever-popular Holiday Buffet returns. Although tickets are sold out for this one-night event, keep an eye on assiniboine.net/events for upcoming offerings from the Culinary Arts team.

There is still time to support Project Red at Assiniboine. Project Red is an annual holiday campaign put on by the ACC Students’ Association in collaboration with the Assiniboine Community College Foundation. The purpose of Project Red is to ensure that all ACC students are supported during the holidays in the form of a holiday hamper. With inflation and the cost of food rising, the Students’ Association has seen an overwhelming response of hamper applicants compared to last year, which is why we need your support for this initiative. Mark your calendars! Chill on the Hill takes place Dec. 13 at 11:30 a.m. on Mazergroup Mainstreet at the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology. Come out, decompress, check out some of the resources available to students and so much more. Student Success Advisors will be onsite to help you navigate the final few weeks of the term.

In the city for Ag Days? The wildly popular Aggie Alumni Mixer is back. Be sure to set aside some time while at Ag Days to pop by and catch up, as well as learn more about all the exciting happenings with our Russ Edwards School of Agriculture & the Environment. This event takes place on Jan. 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the Keystone Centre Viewing Lounge. Hope to see you there!

Jingle All the Way into Wellness Week with the ACC Students’ Association! On Dec. 11, enjoy colouring, hot chocolate and a screening of the movie Elf. On Self-Care Tuesday, pamper yourself with a self-care bag courtesy of the ACCSA! On Wednesday, join the ACCSA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and have your voice heard as a student of Assiniboine Community College, and finally, on Therapy Dog Thursday (Brandon Campus), stop by the ACCSA Event Space to destress with some furry friends and a snack bar!
