SIXTY YEARS AGO
A Brandon business, started 37 years ago by the late Jack E. MacArthur, took another step forward today with the opening of a new headquarters at 420 Van Horne Ave. The new $75,000 MacArthur and Son Ltd. building was officially opened by Mayor S. A. Magnacca. Also participating in the opening was Mrs. Helen MacArthur, company president, widow of the founder R.O. Lissaman, representing the contractors and George MacArthur, general manager.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon office of the UIC is expanding its staff from four to 23 and is moving to a new location from the second floor of the post office building to Rosser Avenue and Ninth Street, where Dayton’s clothing store was once located.
Winnipeg candy retailers and manufacturers are predicting the death of the 10-cent chocolate bar by Jan. 1. They will be increasing their prices by 18 to 25 per cent after the new year because of increased production and labour costs.
FORTY YEARS AGO
One woman and five men survived the tough tests to become Canada’s first astronauts. They are: Roberta Bondar, Bjarni Tryggvson, Steven MacLean, Robert Thirsk, Marc Garneau and Kenneth Money.
Former prime minister Joe Clark has been appointed to study arms control and nuclear disarmament for the Progressive Conservatives, resolving the uncertainty that has surrounded Clark’s role in the party since he lost the leadership to Brian Mulroney in June.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
A Souris group raising money for construction of a new hockey-curling complex has commitments for about $500,000 and hopes to begin construction next year. The price of milk is going up in Manitoba. The maximum price for a two-litre carton in Brandon will rise to $2.24 from $2.19.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Conservatives have turned the page on a decade of electoral disharmony, with the Tories and the Canadian Alliance agreeing to an historic merger to end the vote-splitting that has crippled both parties. Progressive Conservative delegates voted 90 per cent to drop the ‘Progressive’ tag and create a new Conservative Party of Canada with their more staunchly right-wing rivals. That came a day after Alliance members voted 96 per cent in favour of the merger.
TEN YEARS AGO
Taxpayers have one last public forum to weigh in on the City of Brandon’s proposed 2014 budget. City treasurer Dean Hammond will provide an overview of the $75.3-million proposed operating budget on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the main foyer of city hall. Mayor Shari Decter Hirst, city councillors and members of senior administration will then host a question-and-answer session.
