A fatal fire at an apartment building from last Wednesday in Souris is under investigation, the Manitoba RCMP said in a media release issued Monday.

The release said that when Mounties responded to the fire at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 6, the local volunteer fire department and emergency medical services were already on scene.

The fire affected only one unit of the building. The occupant, a 70-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are investigating the cause.

In a phone interview, Souris-Glenwood Fire Chief Chris Couling confirmed that the fire was at the Riverside Apartments at 101 The Drive, on the south side of the Souris River.

He said all but two of the volunteer department’s members responded to the call, and they were able to put out the fire within 15 to 20 minutes of arrival.

“We were dispatched to a fire with smoke showing from one, possibly two suites in the building,” Couling said.

“There was a significant amount of smoke coming through the main door in the hallway as well as suite windows. Then we did what we do — go in and extinguish the fire. We were able to contain it to the one suite.

Couling added there was “obviously a lot of smoke damage to many other suites in the apartment block, especially the main floor that the fire was on, but there wasn’t a lot of smoke damage to the floor below. I think my team did a fantastic job on every aspect of the call.”

Reached by phone, Municipality of Souris-Glenwood Mayor Duane Davison offered his condolences to friends and family of the deceased.

“What I can tell you is that the people that were displaced, most of them are now back in their apartments, which is very good,” Davison said.

“Our (chief administrative officer) was just speaking with the owner of the building yesterday and apparently there’s a couple that is still out. I would assume they’re the ones with the closest proximity to the suite that was on fire.”

He thanked the volunteer fire department for the good work they did that evening.

Both Couling and Davison said they could not disclose the name of the deceased.

By email, the Canadian Red Cross confirmed that it had provided personal disaster assistance to 11 people affected by the fire, which includes food, clothing and personal services as well as emergency lodging for those who did not have family or friends to stay with.
