BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (27-0-1) had a busy week, returning from the Christmas break with four more victories.

On Sunday at Southdale Community Centre, Jaxon Jacobson, Kaeson Fisher and Colten Worthington sniped for Brandon as they and the fourth-place Winnipeg Bruins (16-10-4) traded goals to leave the game tied 3-3 midway through the third period.

The eventual winner came 13:59 into the frame when Ethan Stewart tallied, and Brady Turko added two more goals for a 6-3 final score. Jacobson and Turko each added a pair of assists.

Matthew Michta made 18 saves for Brandon, with Justin Perreault blocking 36 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, the ninth-place Norman Northstars (11-15-2) led 3-2 early in the second period but Brandon scored seven of the next eight goals en route to a 9-4 victory. Owen Wallace and Turko both scored twice, with singles coming from Jonah Lemoine, Jacobson, Worthington, Loughlan McMullan and Stewart.

Burke Hood made 22 saves for Brandon, with Lincoln Richcoon turning aside 45 shots for Norman.

On Friday at J&G Homes Arena, Nash Henwood and Declan Hoad each scored twice and Michta made 23 saves in a 9-0 victory over the Northstars. Josh McGregor, Jacobson, Turko, Worthington and Fisher also scored, with Fisher adding three assists.

Preston Kaludjak and Richcoon made 41 saves for Norman.

On Wednesday at J&G Homes Arena, Hood made 17 saves and Jacobson had three goals and an assist as the Wheat Kings routed the Rangers 9-0.

McGregor had a pair of goals while Lemoine, Easton Odut, Hoad and Henwood also scored. Turko had four assists and Stewart had three helpers.

Chase Glover made 31 saves for Parkland.

The Wheat Kings host the Yellowhead Chiefs at J&G Homes Arena on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning visit on Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at noon.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The second-place Cougars (19-6-0) hosted Norman on Thursday and then had a home-and-home with the Parkland Rangers in Dauphin on Saturday and in Souris on Sunday.

On Sunday at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Tyson Draper scored goals four minutes apart in the second period as the Cougars went on to a 6-0 victory. Regan Anderson also sniped twice with the other goals coming off the sticks of Sebastian Stone and Jack Clark. Bryan Laing had three assists.

Southwest goalie Evan Svoboda made 29 saves for the shutout, with Ethan Myhre blocking 30 shots for Parkland.

On Saturday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Landyn Garton gave the Rangers an early lead and Connor Hoemsen tied it for the Cougars in the third period. After a scoreless overtime, Quinten Fisk had the only goal in the shootout for a 2-1 Rangers win.

Micky Gross made 32 saves for Southwest, with Chase Glover blocking 42 shots for Parkland.

On Thursday, Reed Scaddan scored 3:16 into overtime as Norman earned a 5-4 victory. Tyson Draper scored twice for the Cougars, with Sebastian Stone and Regan Anderson giving the hosts a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Evan Svoboda made 24 saves for Southwest, with Lincoln Richcoon blocking 31 shots for Norman.

The Cougars head to Winnipeg on the weekend to meet the Bruins at the Southdale Community Centre on Saturday at 4 p.m., and visit the Hockey For All Centre to meet the Wild on Sunday at 1 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 11th-place Chiefs (7-16-4) hosted the sixth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (16-9-1) on Friday and Saturday and finished against Norman on Sunday.

On Sunday, after Norman took the lead early in the second period, Yellowhead’s Max Collyer tied it and Alec Strachan and Quinn Schutte scored in the first 46 seconds of the third period for a 3-1 win.

Connor Rapley made 27 saves for Yellowhead, with Preston Kaludjak blocking 32 shots for Norman.

On Saturday afternoon, Addison McIntosh and Cole Hunter scored for the Chiefs to tie the game at 3-3 in the second period but the Thrashers found the mesh late in the second period and added an empty netter in a 5-3 victory. Bo Tibbatts had the other Chiefs goal.

Kieran Madill made 25 saves for Yellowhead, with Austin Kindrat blocking 34 shots for Winnipeg.

On Friday, Thrashers forward Maddox Malmquist scored with four seconds remaining in regulation in a heartbreaking 6-5 loss for the Chiefs. Addison McIntosh had a hat trick and Quinn Schutte scored twice for Yellowhead, which had rebounded from a 5-3 deficit in the third period.

Connor Rapley made 29 saves for Yellowhead, with Taye Timmerman blocking 20 shots for Winnipeg.

After the game on Wednesday against Brandon, the Kenora Thistles visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex for games on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The 10th-place Rangers (10-13-3) visited Brandon and had the home-and-home series with Southwest.

The Rangers hit the highway on the weekend, visiting the Hockey For All Centre to play the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday at 6:45 p.m., and head to the Teulon-Rockwood Arena to meet the Interlake Lightning on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fourth-place Wildcats (12-6-1) returned to Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA action to host the fifth-place Eastman Selects (11-7-2) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and visited the eighth-place Central Plains Capitals (2-16-2) on Sunday.

On Sunday in Portage la Prairie, Charlie Shearer, Karlyn Gudz and Kelsey Huibers scored as the Wildcats earned a 3-1 victory. Danica Averill had the win after making 15 saves between the pipes for Westman. Central Plains goalie Elyse Denbow was sensational, making 63 stops.

On Saturday at Hartney Arena, Erica Stutsky, Kelsey Huibers and Ivy Perkin scored in a 3-1 Wildcats victory over the Selects. Kylie Hack made 18 saves for Westman, with Addison Tomes turning aside 39 shots for Eastman. The Wildcats meet the Pembina Valley Hawks at Carman Dufferin Arena on Saturday at 1:45 p.m., and head to Seven Oaks Arena to play the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday at 1:45 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The second-place Chiefs (14-5-1) met Central Plains and the first-place Winnipeg Ice (16-2-2).

On Sunday at Winnipeg’s Scotia Bank Hockey for all Centre, Hannah Reagh scored her second goal of the game in overtime to lift the Chiefs to a 3-2 victory over the Ice.

Dara Thompson had the other Yellowhead goal. Natalie Rampton earned the win in net for Yellowhead.

On Saturday at Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community, Thompson scored in the 12th round of a shootout for a 3-2 Chiefs victory. Jordyn Veitch and Mia McGregor scored in regulation, while Clair Merckx earned the win in net, making nine saves in the shootout.

The Chiefs return to the ice at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to meet the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and visit the Niverville Centennial Arena to play the Eastman Selects on Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
