A WestJet Encore flight en route to Brandon Municipal Airport experienced a precautionary aborted takeoff at Calgary International Airport in November, aviation authorities said this week.

The Prairie and Northern Regional Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System confirmed the Nov. 19, 2023 incident in a report released on Thursday.

“The flight rejected takeoff after encountering a baggage door warning indication, prompting a ‘Mayday’ call from the flight crew,” the report stated. “No injuries or damage were reported as the aircraft safely taxied off the runway and returned to Gate 6.”

An update on the incident was also released Thursday by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

“The decision to abort takeoff was made promptly, and a Mayday call was issued to Air Traffic Services,” TSB stated. “Upon returning to the gate, company maintenance conducted an inspection, revealing that the baggage door handle had been secured incorrectly.”

The operator of the aircraft, it stated, cooperated fully with the investigation. It said the incident serves as a testament to the efficacy of safety protocols in place, ensuring the well-being of passengers and crew.

The aircraft, registered as GWJK, is back in service after the necessary inspections and corrective measures were undertaken.
