Brandon police say they have a man in custody after an abandoned garage caught fire on Lyndale Drive Sunday morning, a blaze that posed more of a challenge than it normally would for Brandon firefighters due to the cold.
“The cold puts demands on your body and in this area there was more snow, so you are trudging through some deep snow,” Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Shane Collister told the Sun on Sunday.
”Access to the hydrant was a little more difficult and lines can freeze up over time. It does become more difficult when it’s cold. And you do have to switch people a little more often just because of the cold. But this being a shorter scene involvement, it went well considering the temperatures.”
Collister said about 10 firefighters battled the flames, which were pouring out of windows and doors, while dealing with the elements. An extreme cold warning was in effect at 9:30 a.m. when emergency services were called, with the temperature hovering around -26 C and a windchill making it feel like -40 C.
The fire captain said firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in under an hour, but stayed at the scene in the 2000 block of Lydale Drive a bit longer to put out hotspots. While the building frame and the contents caught fire, Collister said they managed to keep the fire from spreading to nearby trees and a fence.
No injuries were reported.
BFES had also put out a smaller fire in a barrel at the same location at 10:44 p.m. Saturday night, Collister noted. He said a fire was burning inside a barrel in the building in what appeared to be an effort by someone to stay warm.
Following the later, larger fire, a witness had seen someone leaving the scene, and police located a suspect in the area who now faces a charge of arson causing damage to property. The suspect was being held by police until his court date Monday morning.
