Assiniboine Community College’s Prairie Innovation Centre for Sustainable Agriculture is expected to be operational in September 2027, with construction set to commence after finalizing the design this summer.
This was disclosed by the college’s dean of agriculture and environment, Tim Hore, during the “One-of-a-Kind Canadian College” session at Manitoba Ag Days on Tuesday.
The recent infusion of a substantial $10-million donation toward the Prairie Innovation Centre, Hore said, has significantly propelled the project forward, highlighting its impact on the college and the centre.
“As we look at the timelines, the final design is expected to be completed this summer, with the tendering process scheduled for December 2024,” he said. “The construction phase is anticipated to span between 24 to 36 months from the tender date, placing us in the building and operational by September 2027.”
When questioned about the project’s overall budget and how the recent $10-million donation aligns with it, Hore said the college is extremely close to closing the budget gap.
“Currently, we are collaborating with federal agencies to secure an additional $40 million for the project,” he said. “Considering the $120-million project cost, it is a necessary step towards ensuring the centre’s success.”
As the Prairie Innovation Centre progresses, he said, it is poised to become a hub for sustainable agriculture research and innovation, contributing to the economic and agricultural development of the region.
