Two former Brandon University Bobcats are giving back to the basketball teams they played for in the 1980s.

Jill and Warren Watt are donating $200,000 to create scholarship-bursaries split evenly between the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The university made the announcement during Alumni Night celebrations on Saturday before both teams faced off against their counterparts from the University of Saskatchewan.

Jill was named an Academic All-Canadian in the 1989-90 season and received the Student Council Athletics H.S. Pursue Memorial Trophy, while Warren helped the men’s team win a national championship when he played for them between 1985 and 1987.

Jill Watt was named an Academic All-Canadian in the 1989-90 season and received the Student Council Athletics H.S. Pursue Memorial Trophy while playing for the Brandon University Bobcats women's basketball team. Last Saturday, the university announced that Jill and her husband Warren, another former Bobcat, were donating $200,000 toward the creation of scholarship-bursaries for basketball student-athletes at BU. A media release sent out Monday said the Watts wanted to provide future student-athletes at BU with the access to bursaries and scholarships that supported their own post-secondary experiences.

“Both on and off the court, Bobcat student-athletes are committed to their teammates, to our campus, and to our community. Alumni like Jill and Warren Watt show how that is a lasting commitment,” BU athletics director Russ Paddock said in the release.

“Investing in the next generation of athletes is a slam dunk and we are so thankful for the Watts’ generous donation, which will contribute significantly to the growth and success of both our men’s and women’s Bobcats basketball programs and help us drive a culture of excellence and achievement.”
