• 60 YEARS AGO — Jim Duncan and his Virden rink of Bill Carefoot, Sym Gerrand and Alex Scott topped eight other rinks to win the right to represent the Virden dealership area in Massey-Ferguson playdowns.
• 50 YEARS AGO — In the NorthWest Hockey league top scorer is Roy McLachlan of Neepawa Natives who has a league high with 24 goals. And the Neepawa goaltending duo of Cec Pittman and Ed Williams is tops with a 3.77 average. In 13 games, the Natives have been scored upon 49 times.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Mel Logan of Souris captured his first Labatt’s Super League curling championship in Wawanesa, defeating Larry Taylor of Wawanesa 7-5 in the final. The victory was worth $2,000 for Logan, third Doug Armour, second Lloyd Lang and lead Allan Granger. Taylor and his rink of third Kent Myers, second Jim Horna and lead Grant Everard earned $1,000.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Derek Chalmers scored three goals to spark the Sioux Valley Dakotas to an 8-7 triumph facing the Kenton Cougars in the North Central Hockey League.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Josh Harding got the Brandon Wheat Kings to overtime and Ryan Stone provided the finishing touch. Harding made 47 saves while Stone extended his points streak to 10 games by scoring 4:14 into overtime to give the Wheat Kings a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen in front of a Keystone Centre crowd of 2,719.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team ended its two-year playoff drought and set a new team record for most wins in a Canada West season by earning a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) victory over the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen. The Bobcats, ranked second in the country, booked their ticket to the Canada West playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign It was the team’s 14th win of the season, surpassing Brandon’s previous high of 13, set in 2009-10.
