Birdtail homicide under investigation
RCMP major crimes and Manitoba First Nations Police Service are investigating the death of a 40-year-old man from the Birdtail Sioux First Nation on Tuesday as a homicide.
Both RCMP and MFNPS responded to a report of an injured man at a home in the First Nation.
Upon arrival, officers found the 40-year-old man, who was pronounced deceased on scene.
RCMP declined to comment on what injuries the man had sustained.
Police are also asking anyone with information about the homicide to call the MFNPS at 204-568-4539.
Brandon man arrested in Portage
A 25-year-old man from Brandon was arrested in Portage la Prairie last Friday after an alleged assault on a Winnipeg man. During the arrest, Mounties seized a modified handgun.
Lawrence Julian Daniels, 25, was arrested on numerous weapons-related offences.
On Jan. 19 around 6 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a fight in progress at a home on Poplar Bay in Portage la Prairie.
A 23-year-old man said he had been assaulted by a man and a woman, who had both fled the scene.
No serious injuries were reported.
Police located the two suspects walking nearby and when confronted, they apparently tried to flee. After a short chase, officers arrested the two suspects.
Upon their arrest, officers seized a backpack and found a modified handgun inside. The gun had been rigged to discharge immediately upon being handled.
Dana Marie Popko of Winnipeg was also arrested for weapons-related offences. Both Popko and Daniels were remanded into custody.
Assault on police officer
A 22-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday morning after allegedly spitting in a Brandon police officer’s face during her arrest.
Around 9:50 a.m., police were called to a disturbance at a business on the 800 block of Pacific Avenue. A woman was found at the scene, allegedly swearing at staff and dumping solvents on the floor.
When police went to arrest her, she allegedly spit on one of the officers.
