Hey there, time traveller!

Valley Life Recreation is one giant step closer to reaching its fundraising goal after a $50,000 donation by Cenovus Energy.
It’s not the first time the energy corporation, which owns and operates an ethanol plant in Minnedosa, has donated to Valley Life Recreation’s Squirrel Hills Trail Park. A $10,000 donation in 2021 was also given to the group. The latest donation brings the company’s total contribution to date to $60,000.
In return for the company’s support, Valley Life Recreation is letting the company have naming rights for the popular trail that runs along the perimeter of the park. A naming announcement will come in the future as park construction continues, Valley Life Recreation’s website states.

Cenovus supports initiatives like the Squirrel Hills Trail Park that improve the well-being and lifestyles of people living in Minnedosa and the surrounding area, Avi Bahl, ethanol plant manager in Minnedosa, stated in a press release on Jan. 19.
“The Squirrel Hills Trail Park does exactly that by fostering an active community, boosting tourism in Minnedosa and neighbouring areas and a better overall quality of life for residents,” he said.
Receiving such a high level of support from Cenovus Energy has helped spur on the work the Valley Life Recreation Board is doing to build out the Squirrel Hills Trail Park, located close to the ethanol plant, said board chairperson Dave Ternier.
“We’re thrilled to have their involvement in what has already started becoming a popular provincial attraction. The support form Avi and staff at Cenovus Energy is deeply appreciated,” Ternier said.
The recent funding announcement brings the total funds raised for the trail park from various sources up to $686,000 and will go toward construction of the park’s trailhead. The main construction of the trails was completed last fall and work on the trailhead began in October with the installation of a new parking lot.
This spring, construction will begin on concrete work, a large timber-frame pavilion, trail connections, landscaping and permanent signage. Ternier said final construction plans such as installing washrooms, play areas, the Ole Heie Skillz Park and more depend on the board finding continuing success in their fundraising campaign. He said the group hopes to raise another $150,000 to $200,000.
