Manitoba’s Public Utilities Board approved Centra Gas’s application to reduce its commodity rate on Thursday, which should lead to most customers saving 5.7 per cent on their annual natural gas bill effective Feb. 1.

In a media release, the board said the commodity rate was being reduced from $0.1021 per cubic metre of gas to $0.0857 per cubic metre of gas.

Additionally, a referral rate rider reduction from $0.0045 to $0.0037 per cubic metre was also approved.

According to the release, Centra charges customers the same gas commodity rate it is charged and the rate decrease is because of declining natural gas prices in the North American market.

Together, the decreases are expected to save the typical residential customer around $38 a year — 5.7 per cent.

However, this does not affect gas commodity rates for customers on fixed-term, fixed-price contracts with either Centra or private brokers.
