BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (34-0-1) swept the 12th-place Kenora Thistles (5-28-3) with a pair of 12-1 decisions at J&G Homes Arena during the weekend after beating the Parkland Rangers earlier in the week in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League.

On Sunday, Loughlan McMullan, Easton Odut and Jaxon Jacobson all scored twice and Kaeson Fisher, Nash Henwood Jonah Lemoine, Ethan Stewart, Brady Turko and Cole Lobreau added singles as the hosts scored the final nine goals.

Burke Hood made 13 saves for Brandon, with Morgan Blackwood blocking 45 shots for Kenora.

On Saturday, Stewart had a hat trick, Turko, Henwood and Colten Worthington each scored twice and Odut, Declan Hoad and Lemoine each added a single in the 12-1 thumping. Jacobson had three assists and Worthington had two for a four-point game.

Matthew Michta made nine saves for Brandon, with James Hill turning aside 30 shots for Kenora.

On Tuesday, Cade Legaarden gave the Rangers an early lead and he assisted a goal by Alex Campbell in the third period, but the Wheat Kings scored the four goals in the middle en route to a 4-2 victory.

Henwood scored twice, including the winner, and McMullan and Josh McGregor added singles. Burke Hood made 21 saves for Brandon, with Chase Glover turning in a sensational effort for Parkland, stopping 57 shots.

The Wheat Kings have nine games left in the regular season, with the Southwest Cougars visiting J&G Homes Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg Thrashers hosting them at Gateway Recreation Centre on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The second-place Cougars (23-8-3) had three road games, meeting the Yellowhead Chiefs on Friday, the ninth-place Eastman Selects (14-19-1) on Saturday and the fifth-place Interlake Lightning (19-13-3) on Sunday.

On Sunday at the Teulon-Rockwood Arena, Connor Hoemsen and Kylan Anderson gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead, the Lightning tied, and then Tyson Draper, Regan Anderson and Jack Clark scored in a 5-2 Southwest win.

Micky Gross made 33 saves for Southwest, with Dylan McFadyen turning aside 31 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday at Beausejour’s Sun Gro Centre, Eastman’s Grayson Slaney scored with 4:12 remaining to give the hosts a 4-3 lead, but Jesse Brown replied 70 seconds later to tie the game. Jack Swaenepoel added his second of the game 37 seconds after that for the winner and Regan Anderson scored his hat-trick goal into an empty net for a 6-4 Cougars win.

Micky Gross made 32 saves for Southwest, with Samuel Fontaine stopping 20 shots for Eastman.

On Friday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Max Collyer, Quinn Schutte, Rory Poole, Cole Hunter and Bryan Laing scored as the Chiefs beat the Cougars 5-3. Tyson Draper, Kelby Diehl and Bryan Laing replied for Southwest.

Evan Svoboda made 31 saves for Southwest, with Kieran Madill blocking 36 shots for Yellowhead.

Southwest has 10 regular season games remaining. The Cougars visit the Wheat Kings on Friday, then return to Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex to host the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg Bruins on Sunday at 2 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 10th-place Chiefs (11-18-4) only had the one game against Southwest last week.

The Chiefs, who have 11 games left, visit Dauphin’s Credit Union Place to face the Parkland Rangers on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., and then return to the Shoal Lake Communiplex to host the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg Wild on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The 11th-place Rangers (11-19-3) headed up to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena and were dominated by the seventh-place Norman Northstars (16-16-2) in a weekend set.

On Sunday, Preston Kaludjak stopped all 22 shots he faced and Daylin Monias scored twice in a 6-0 Norman victory.

Chase Glover and Ethan Myhre made 49 saves for Parkland.

On Saturday, Tyler Wamboldt’s hat trick led the Northstars to an 8-1 victory over the Rangers, who received their lone goal from Quinten Fisk. Referees called 26 penalties in the third period alone, and the teams shared 24 power plays during the game.

Chase Glover and Ethan Myhre combined to make 39 saves for Parkland, with Preston Kaludjak blocking 22 shots for Norman.

Parkland also fell 4-2 to Brandon on Tuesday.

The Rangers, who have 11 games remaining, have their next three games at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, hosting Yellowhead on Tursday and then the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The Wildcats (16-7-1), who are tied for second with the Chiefs, had the weekend off from Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA action and have just four regular season games left on their docket, all at Hartney Arena and starting at 7:30 p.m. They host the Yellowhead Chiefs on Friday and Saturday and finish up against the Winnipeg Ice on Friday, Feb. 9 and the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday, Feb. 10.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The second-place Chiefs (16-7-1) also had the weekend off.

They visit Hartney to meet the Wildcats on Friday and Saturday, and finish up their regular season at the Shoal Lake Communiplex with a pair of starts at 2:30 p.m., against the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday, Feb. 10 and the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday, Feb. 11.
