BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (36-0-1) continued their winning ways against the Southwest Cougars and the fifth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (21-14-1) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Saturday at Gateway Recreation Centre, a trio of Western Hockey League Wheat Kings prospects ruled the day as Jaxon Jacobson had two goals and four assists, Brady Turko had two goals and two assists and Easton Odut had a goal and three assists in a 7-2 rout of the Thrashers.

Colten Worthington and Loughlan McMullan also sniped for the Wheat Kings.

Burke Hood made 27 saves for Brandon, with Taye Timmerman and Austin Kindrat combining to stop 32 shots for Winnipeg.

On Friday at J&G Homes Arena, Jacobson scored and had five assists as the Wheat Kings routed the Cougars 7-1. Odut and Turko each had a pair of goals with Nolan Saunderson and Worthington also sniping. Tyson Draper replied for the Cougars. Matthew Michta made 14 saves for Brandon, with Micky Gross blocking 35 shots for Southwest.

The Wheat Kings have seven games remaining. This weekend, they visit Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to face the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The second-place Cougars (24-10-3) met the Wheat Kings on Friday and then hosted the third-place Winnipeg Wild (22-11-4) on Saturday and the fourth-place Winnipeg Bruins (20-14-5) on Sunday at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex.

On Sunday, Maxx Hamelin scored 12:45 into the third period to break 2-2 tie as the Bruins earned a 3-2 victory. Jackson Hofer and Kole Beard had given the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

Micky Gross made 31 saves for the Cougars, with Justin Perreault blocking 29 shots for the Bruins.

On Saturday, Kelby Diehl, Regan Anderson, Nate Robson, Lynden Gould and Jack Clark all sniped as the Cougars gutted out a 5-4 victory over the Wild. Evan Svoboda made 46 saves for Southwest, with Jacob Armstrong turning aside 27 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars head to Winnipeg to face the Wild at the Hockey For All Centre on Saturday at 4:15 p.m., and then play the Thrashers at the Gateway Recreation Centre on Sunday at 1 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 11th-place Chiefs (11-19-6) met the Parkland Rangers early in the week and faced the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday and Winnipeg Wild on Sunday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday, Addison McIntosh and Wyatt Dyck scored but the Wild earned a 4-2 victory. Kieran Madill made 41 saves for Yellowhead, with Dawson Groen turning aside 27 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Max Collyer sniped with 2:17 left and DJ Meloney added his second goal with 56 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, but Shea Chornley and Jaxson Fillion scored in the shootout as the Bruins earned a 6-5 victory. Cole Hunter and Addison McIntosh had the other Yellowhead goals.

Kieran Madill made 31 saves for Yellowhead, with Justin Perreault blocking 34 shots in the first 65 minutes plus two in the shootout for Winnipeg.

On Tuesday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Tavyn Boychuk scored 95 seconds into overtime as the Rangers won 4-3.

Cash Clarkson, Ethan Carnegie and Hayden Seib had the other Parkland goals, while Rowin Richmond and Riley Swereda gave Yellowhead a 2-0 lead but Addison McIntosh had to score with 5:45 left in regulation to tie the game after the hosts took a 3-2 lead. Kieran Madill made 24 saves for Yellowhead, with Ethan Myhre turning aside 35 shots for Parkland.

The Chiefs, who have eight games left, host the Rangers on Thursday at 8 p.m., visit Beausejour’s Sun Gro Centre to face the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Hockey For All Centre to skate against the Wild on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The 10th-place Rangers (13-20-3) hosted Yellowhead on Tuesday and then met the sixth-place Interlake Lightning (20-14-3) on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, Cash Clarkson had the lone goal for the Rangers as the Lightning won 4-1. Ethan Myhre made 30 saves for Parkland, with Wheat Kings prospect Dylan McFadyen blocking 29 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday, Ethan Carnegie, Tavyn Boychuk, Hayden Seib, Quinten Fisk and Cam Sarna scored as Parkland came back from three one-goal deficits to earn a 5-4 victory. Chase Glover made 48 saves for Parkland, with Alex Myers and Dylan McFadyen combining to stop 30 shots for Interlake.

The Rangers meet Yellowhead at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Thursday at 8 p.m., and then have an all-Winnipeg weekend, playing the Thrashers at the Gateway Recreation Centre on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and the Bruins at the Southdale Community Centre on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

GIRLS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The second-place Wildcats (18-7-1) swept the Yellowhead Chiefs at Hartney Arena in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Saturday, Mia Mcgregor gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead and Hannah Reagh scored in the third period, but the Wildcats responded with markers by Kelsey Huibers, Erica Stutsky, Ivy Perkin, Paige Crossley and Charlie Shearer in a 5-2 win.

Danica Averill made 33 saves for Westman, while Clair Merckx turned aside 27 shots for Yellowhead.

On Friday, Reese Schutte scored twice and Karlyn Gudz and Ivy Perkin also had goals as the Wildcats cruised to a 4-1 victory.

Faith Burtnick had the lone goal for the Chiefs.

Danica Averill made 25 saves for Westman, while Natalie Rampton turning aside 22 shots for Yellowhead.

The Wildcats finish up their regular season schedule against the Winnipeg Ice on Friday and the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday. Both games are at Hartney Arena and start at 7:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The fourth-place Chiefs (16-9-1) saw all their action last week in Hartney against the Wildcats. The Chiefs finish up their regular season at the Shoal Lake Communiplex with a pair of starts at 2:30 p.m., against the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday and the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday.
