With back-to-back victories facing the Yellowhead Chiefs on home turf in Hartney, rookie Danica Averill was named goalie of the week in the U18 AAA Manitoba Female Hockey League.

The Brandon Grade 9 student built on the team’s five-game winning streak, and allowed the second-place Wildcats (18-7-1) to move within four points of the first-place Winnipeg Ice (19-4-3).

The Wildcats posted 4-1 and 5-2 victories with Averill between the pipes, as she improved her record to a league-best 12-4. While she’s had no shutouts this season, with two more wins she improved her goals-against-average (GAA) to 1.83, while her save per centre dropped to .946.

Stephanie Jacob of the Winnipeg Ice earned player of the week honours thanks to an eight-point effort in three league games.

The league’s top sniper with 31 goals and 14 assists in 25 games had five goals and three helpers for her team.

The Grade 12 student from Winnipeg, who has committed to the Maine Black Bears this fall, plays a 200-foot game with and without the puck. She blocks shots on the penalty kill and consistently applies pressure when playing defence to limit many puck carriers their time and space with a puck.

Of note, of her league-high 31 goals, she’s not once scored on the power-play for the Ice. Forward Paige Crossley of the Westman Wildcats has the distinction of being the league’s power-play specialist with a league-high four goals.
