IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Harrison High continued their onslaught in the City Junior Basketball League as they swept a double header from Neelin Composite 45-22. They are undefeated in league play. Adrian De Hoog sparked the winners with an 11-point outburst, while Dale Brown was close behind with 10. John Campbell chalked up six.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Barry Hutsal scored five goals in leading the undefeated Deloraine Royals to a 13-2 victory over Melita Bisons in a SouthWest Hockey League play. Wayne Coxworth, Lyle Franklin and Bob Willcox scored twice each and Neil Franklin and Ken Onchulenko chipped in with singles.
• 40 YEARS AGO — For the past month Maureen Fleury has led Crocus Plainsmen with her outstanding defensive play. Last night, the 5-foot-3 guard continued that trend, but went one step further, scoring 15 points to lead the visiting Plainsmen to a 65-48 win facing Vincent Massey Vikings in a Brandon High School Basketball League varsity girls’ game.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Darryl Albrecht scored twice to spark the Boissevain Border Kings to a 5-2 triumph over the Souris Elks in a South West Hockey League game. Quinton Grindle, Glenn Brake and Scott Patterson scored singles for the Border Kings.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Tasha Hunter’s quest for a Canadian junior women’s curling title got off to the wrong start. Despite scoring a deuce in the ninth end and stealing a single in the 10th, Hunter’s Brandon rink fell 5-4 to Jill Mouzar of Nova Scotia in the opening draw of the national junior event.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings received points from 12 of their 18 skaters, led by two goals and an assist from Tim McGauley as they blasted the Swift Current Broncos 8-1. Jayce Hawryluk added a goal and two helpers for the Wheat Kings, while John Quenneville and Richard Nejezchleb matched Lisoway with a goal and an assist. Eric Roy and Jesse Gabrielle scored Brandon’s other goals, while Peter Quenneville dished out three assists and Curtis Honey made 23 saves for the victory.
