BPS mourns loss of officer
The Brandon Police Service is mourning the loss of one its members earlier this week.
“Const. Lucien Ethier was a soft-spoken officer who was known by the public and his fellow officers as being a fair and caring man with the utmost integrity,” BPS Acting Chief Randy Lewis said in a statement.

Ethier passed away on Monday when he was off duty. Police say he was driving his own vehicle when he experienced a medical issue and died.
He served 20 years with BPS and provided firearms training to dozens of police recruits during his seven years in an instructor role. He worked in many different areas within the police service, but his last position was as the BPS representative on the RCMP National Weapons Enforcement Support Team.
“Speaking on behalf of all the Brandon Police Service employees, our hearts go out to Lucien’s family and many friends during this time of grieving. He will be missed by so many,” Lewis said.
Former BPS police chief Wayne Balcaen told the Sun that he knew Ethier on both a personal and professional level.
Ethier, he said, loved the outdoors and nature, and the two would often go fishing together.
“Lucien was an incredibly strong person and has always been very athletic,” Balcaen said. “He always had a love of nature, hunting, fishing and just being outdoors.”
When asked who caught the bigger fish, Balcaen laughed.
“Always him, he always won.”
The flags at BPS headquarters have been flown at half-mast this week.
