BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (38-0-1) swept the eighth-place Norman Northstars (18-19-2) at Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Sunday, after a scoreless opening period, Easton Odut, Cole Lobreau and Jaxon Jacobson scored in the first six minutes of the second period to put the game away in a 5-0 victory. Josh McGregor and Ethan Stewart also sniped for Brandon, which had 28 shots in the second period.

Burke Hood made 31 saves for Brandon, with Lincoln Richcoon blocking 45 shots for Norman.

On Saturday, the Wheat Kings ultimately won big, but the Northstars didn’t make the 9-4 decision easy.

Brandon built up a 4-1 lead, Norman fought back to 4-3, and after the Wheat Kings scored twice, the Northstars made it 6-4. Three unanswered Brandon goals in the third period ultimately put the game away.

Loughlan McMullan and Colten Worthington each scored twice, with singles coming from Easton Odut, Cole Dupuis, Ethan Stewart, Jaxon Jacobson and Brady Turko. Owen Wallace and Kaeson Fisher each had three assists.

Tyler Wamboldt had a part in all four Norman goals, finishing with two goals and two assists. Matthew Michta made 22 saves for Brandon, with Preston Kaludjak stopping 45 shots for Norman.

The Wheat Kings host the Eastman Selects at J&G Homes Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The third-place Cougars (24-12-3) had a Winnipeg weekend, facing the second-place Wild (25-11-4) on Saturday and the fourth-place Thrashers (23-14-1) on Sunday.

On Sunday at the Gateway Recreation Centre, the Thrashers scored with less than two minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie and then added a pair of empty netters in a 4-1 Winnipeg win. Regan Anderson replied for Southwest.

Evan Svoboda made 32 saves for Southwest, with Winnipeg’s Taye Timmerman blocking 25 shots, including a penalty shot by Jack Clark.

On Saturday at the Hockey For All Centre, Kelby Diehl sniped after the Wild went up 2-0 but the Cougars didn’t score again until late in the third when Jack Clark found the net in a 5-2 loss.

Micky Gross made 34 saves for Southwest, with Jacob Armstrong stopping 27 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars spend the week at home at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, meeting Yellowhead on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and the Thrashers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 10th-place Chiefs (12-21-6) had a busy weekend, meeting the Parkland Rangers on Thursday, the ninth-place Eastman Selects (17-21-1) on Saturday and the Wild on Sunday.

On Sunday at the Hockey For All Centre, Riley Swereda scored Yellowhead’s lone goal late in the third period in a 4-1 loss to the Wild.

Kieran Madill made 24 saves for Yellowhead, with Jacob Armstrong stopping 16 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday at Beausejour’s Sun Gro Centre, Bo Tibbatts, Quinn Schutte and Hudson Davidson gave the Chiefs a 3-1 lead after the first period, and Cole Hunter tied it 4-4 in the third period, but Selects forward Job Peters scored with 2:16 left in a 5-4 Eastman victory.

Kieran Madill made 35 saves for Yellowhead, with Samuel Fontaine turning aside 22 shots for Eastman.

On Thursday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Kieran Madill made 22 saves and Cole Hunter, Chase Cochrane, Addison McIntosh, Dylan Miko and DJ Meloney in a 5-0 Chiefs win over the Rangers.

Chase Glover stopped 36 shots for Parkland.

Yellowhead meets Southwest at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and then hosts the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

After the 11th-place Rangers (13-23-3) fell to the Chiefs on Thursday, they met the Winnipeg Thrashers on Saturday and the fifth-place Winnipeg Bruins (21-15-5) on Sunday.

On Sunday at the Southdale Community Centre, Cade Legaarden, Maddox Shindle, Hayden Seib and Cash Clarkson scored for Parkland, but a three-goal outburst by Winnipeg in a nine-minute span in the third period was enough for a 5-4 Winnipeg victory.

Chase Glover made 28 saves for Parkland, with Justin Perreault blocking 27 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday at the Gateway Recreation Centre, not much went right for the Rangers as Thrashers goalie Austin Kindrat stopped all 20 shots he faced in an 8-0 thumping.

Chase Glover and Ethan Myhre combined to make 29 saves for Parkland.

Parkland has its final regular season games at home when the Winnipeg Bruins visit on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The second-place Wildcats (19-7-2) enjoyed a three-point weekend at Hartney Arena against the first-place Winnipeg Ice (20-4-4) on Friday and the fifth-place Winnipeg Avros (15-10-2) on Saturday to finish up their 28-game Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA regular season.

Natalie Rampton earned the win for Yellowhead.

On Saturday, Kirby Gray’s second goal of the game came in overtime to lift the Chiefs to a 4-3 victory over the Ice. Reese Boguski and Dara Thompson had the other Yellowhead goals.
