The Assiniboine Community College Cougars are off to a winning start at Canadian College Athletic Association curling nationals.
The ACC women’s team of skip Kristen Carlson, vice-skip Neveah Witherspoon, second Ashlie Jewar and lead Jada Ricard edged Mohawk College 10-9 in their opener in Fredericton, N.B., on Tuesday.
The Cougars men’s foursome were still on the ice at press time in their first game.
During the five-day CCAA curling championship, the eight-team men’s and women’s fields will play a single round-robin, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals, which are set for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the medal games at 2:30 p.m.
The Cougars two foursomes will be looking to return to Manitoba as CCAA champions, with both teams playing out of the Brandon Curling Club against men’s and women’s teams in different leagues, according to men’s vice-skip Avery Smart.
“We played in the men’s league to get competition, with no actual college league to play in,” he said.
Besides Smart, the men’s team features skip Brendan Chubaty, second Ryder Chetyrbuk and lead Mateo Otto.
Both teams are coached by Maureen Bonar.
