Warner Construction of Dauphin has been awarded the $330,876 contract for the new physical education building at Brandon College. Work is expected to get underway immediately on the southwest corner of the campus near the intersection of Louise Avenue and 20th Street.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The provincial department of education has approved Brandon school board’s request for one 445-student school to replace Park and Alexandra elementary schools in Brandon’s core area.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Lead singer Leona Sanders and bass player Paul Solon, together with their band Cold Duck, entertained 650 people into the wee hours of the final social of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
Haygood Hardy performed to a crowd of about 150 people at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The lines are open at the state-of-the-art telemarketing centre in downtown Brandon. Employees of GWE Group Inc., located in Scotia Towers, today began soliciting residents of rural Manitoba on behalf of company clients.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair attracted 117,500 people over the past week, a figure that’s up nine per cent from last year and 15 per cent over its five-year average. Traditionally, snowfalls have a reputation for keeping people away, which was not the case this year.
Families evacuated from their homes because of flooding began to return home yesterday as provincial officials predicted the worst may be over in many areas along the Red River system.
TEN YEARS AGO
The top prize at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair’s penultimate jumping competition went to a rider not only new to the fair, but new to Canada. Marion Ostmeyer, originally from northwest Germany, moved to Alberta in October to ride at Calgary’s Creekside Farms equestrian facility. And all of her horses went along for the intercontinental trip, including 13-year-old Roulett, the horse that helped her nab the top placing in the RBC Cup last night.
A 44-year-old man is dead and several others injured, including four children, after a head-on collision between a SUV and a school bus on Waywayseecappo First Nation on Thursday night.
The University of North Dakota student body has always been supportive of its men’s hockey team, and Bryn Chyzyk is enjoying the attention the squad is garnering right now. The 21-year-old from Virden is a fourth-line forward with UND, which pulled off a pair of huge upsets last weekend to advance to the NCAA Frozen Four, slated for April 10-12 in Philadelphia.
