Brandon Police Service is investigating a threat made against Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School by a student on Tuesday.

“At approximately 3:45 p.m., we received notification that a threat was made against the school for April 10,” said a letter from the school’s principal addressed to parents on Wednesday.

The letter goes on to say that the Brandon School Division’s risk and threat assessment team worked with police to investigate the threat and that police “addressed the matter with the individual of concern.”

As a precaution, the letter said there will be an increased police presence at the school.

By email, BPS Sgt. Dana McCallum confirmed that police had been notified of the threat around 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Our officers immediately became involved and addressed the individual and the threat. Our officers continue today to follow up with the investigation.”

McCallum said the student in question has not been arrested and “is under the supervision of a responsible adult.”

In a separate letter to parents across the city, the BSD said that in response to rumours it wanted to clarify that no other schools received threats.

“Each school within our division has a school-based Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) Team with divisional support,” the letter said.

“There are ongoing reminders, student presentations, and supports in place to help students understand the importance of reporting any concerns to an adult. School staff also have mandatory reporting to the school administration. All threat-related behaviours are taken seriously, assessed rapidly, and are addressed.”

When the Sun asked the school division for comment, a spokesperson sent a copy of that same letter and said the increased police presence was for Wednesday only.

“The increased police presence was just for today with the intent to help reassure students and respond to questions students might have,” the spokesperson said in an email.

“We have an active partnership with the Brandon Police Service School Resource Officers, that regularly attend our schools to assist with education, crime prevention, and community relations to meet the diverse needs of residents in the Brandon school community.”
