SIXTY YEARS AGO
City traffic police said 1963 was one of the worst years on record for traffic accidents but the Canadian Highway Safety council presented Brandon with an award for outstanding records of highway safety. During 1963 in Brandon there were 417 accidents, 139 injuries and damage totalling $144,124. The year was fatality free.
Garrett Russell was voted best speaker at the meeting of the Toastmasters’ Club 293 at the Prince Edward Hotel.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Water control officials have sharply revised forecasts and now are looking for flood levels on the Red River comparable to those of 1966, the worst high-water year since 1950.
More than 300 residents of the flood-threatened Roseau Indian reserve south of Winnipeg near the Manitoba-U.S. border will be moved to the Rivers air base today.
FORTY YEARS AGO
City officials estimate $10 million will be needed in the next five years to improve the city’s overloaded sewage treatment plant.
Eddy Arnold of Shoal Lake, a heavy horseman, and Anna Hicks of Souris, a teacher, home economist and leading member of the Women’s Institute, have both been named to the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Canada goes into a meeting with NATO allies in Brussels today in favour of using air strikes to protect UN safe areas in Bosnia from Serbian attacks.
A new cross-border trade war could be building as the Americans promise tariffs on wheat and the Canadians threaten retaliation against pasta, apples, wine and rice.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A photo portraying victory on the faces of a local high school team has earned a Brandon Sun photographer an award at the annual Western Canadian News Photographers Association photo of the year ceremonies over the weekend in Calgary. Colin Corneau won first place in the Sports Action category for an image showing members of the Neelin Spartans girls volleyball team celebrating a provincial championship last November.
Harrison Middle School principal Doug Milak has been appointed as assistant superintendent for the Brandon School Division. Milak will replace assistant superintendent Harvey Laluk, who is retiring this summer after 32 years with the school division. Milak has been principal at Harrison Middle School since September. Before that, he was principal for three years at William Morton Collegiate in Gladstone.
TEN YEARS AGO
Employees at Maple Leafs Foods’ are starting to feel the pinch as the company continues to scale back the number of hours available at the local hog processing plant. One employee, who works the second shift at the plant, said he is working eight hours less per week compared to last year; and it’s a far cry from the days when overtime was readily available upon request.
Kim Longstreet, an avid volunteer and longtime Brandonite, has announced she will seek the South Centre ward seat in the upcoming Brandon municipal election.
