Brian and Esther Pallister marked 25 years of rewarding Brandon University students with scholarships on Wednesday.
The couple began with their gift in 1999 to BU’s Success in Mind campaign, although Brian’s charitable giving to the BU Foundation started earlier, in 1990. Between 2001 and 2021, the Pallisters established four endowed awards to support a variety of students.
Brian, a former Manitoba premier, said they see the donations as an opportunity to repay the institution.
“Esther and I see these scholarships as a way to give something back to the university and province that we appreciate so much,” he said. “My time at BU helped me discover my potential and I believe lifelong learning is the key to achieving one’s goals.”
A double alumnus of BU, earning a bachelor of arts in 1975 and a bachelor of education in 1978, Brian was also a standout Bobcat basketball player and later provincial champion curler.
Twelve students were awarded Pallister Scholarships this year in multiple categories, with each scholarship worth between $780 and $1,000. Since the Pallister scholarships were first awarded, more than $60,000 has been disbursed to students.
BU president David Docherty said the scholarships have had a profound impact on the university community, providing vital support to students pursuing their academic and athletic aspirations.
The scholarships, funded through endowed funds, have been instrumental in supporting BU students financially, Docherty said.
“The endowed funds generate dividends annually, allowing us to provide financial support to countless students,” he told the Sun in a phone interview. “These scholarships alleviate financial pressures, enabling students to focus on their studies and athletic pursuits without the added burden of part-time jobs. It’s a game-changer for many, facilitating quicker degree completion and allowing them to fully immerse themselves in their academic and athletic endeavours.”
What sets the Pallister family scholarships apart is their inclusivity, benefiting both male and female athletes across various athletic programs, he said.
“The inclusivity of these scholarships reflects our commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students. Whether male or female, these scholarships empower our athletes to excel both on and off the field, fostering a sense of belonging and support within our community.”
Brian’s presence on campus, he said, is always welcomed and appreciated, adding he exudes a genuine interest in the students and their achievements, reinforcing his dedication to their success.
Sydni Belinski and Sierra Hadway are among the recipients of the Pallister ACC/BU Scholarship. Joining them are Caitlin Anderson, Reese Bolack, Sierra Fast and Joshua Hillier, who have been awarded the Pallister Entrance Scholarship.
Recognizing excellence in athletics, Riley Grusing (volleyball), Khari Ojeda-Harvey (basketball), and Zachary Wood (soccer) have received the Pallister Men’s Athletic Award. Similarly, Kallie Ball (volleyball), Emilie Dornez (soccer), and Beth Dueck (basketball) have been honoured with the Pallister Women’s Athletic Award.
Bolack, who is just completing her first year at BU in pre-nursing, lauded the Pallisters’ donations to the students.
“I am beyond grateful to have been selected as a recipient of one of Mr. and Mrs. Pallister’s scholarships,” he said. “Their generosity will support me as I work toward a future career in nursing, and for that, I am immensely appreciative.”
Established in 1980, the BU Foundation now stewards more than $70 million and last year disbursed more than $3 million to BU causes — including more than $2 million directly to deserving students in the form of scholarships and bursaries.
“Scholarships are one of the best ways to support the new generation of learners, helping ensure that everyone can reach their full potential,” Docherty said. “Our sincere thanks to the Pallister family for their support of the BU Foundation over the last quarter-century. Their generous financial gifts have opened doors to a brighter future for many Brandon University students.”
