The Manitoba government has transferred ownership of the Crown land and buildings on Assiniboine College’s Parkland Campus in Dauphin to the college’s board of governors.

The move, formalized in a recent Order in Council by the provincial government, was facilitated at a nominal cost of $1.

College president Mark Frison said the move puts control of decision-making about the property closer to the user, marking a pivotal moment in the institution’s history.

“This allows the college to be the responsible steward and ensure scarce resources are directed to areas of highest priority,” Frison told the Sun in an email. “There are currently no major construction nor renovation projects planned for this location in the immediate future.”

Ensuring community involvement and transparency remains a top priority for the college, Frison said, campus director Carol Stewart will appear at a Dauphin City Council meeting in May to discuss the change in ownership as well as program opportunities.

“We continue to work with stakeholders to explore labour market needs such as the ones that will see us offer programs like Sustainable Foods and Social Service Workers in the year to come,” he said.

Frison said he was grateful for the government’s support and reiterated the college’s commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities.

“Assiniboine is very pleased to be taking ownership of the land and buildings associated with our campuses,” he added. “We look forward to the two Brandon campuses also coming under our stewardship in the near future.”

The Dauphin property at 520 Whitmore Ave. East has been occupied by the college since 1986 and comprises about 4.04 acres in area, according to the provincial order.
