Starting April 30, the City of Brandon will begin an alternating collection schedule for green and blue bins.
The new schedule comes after the city announced last Friday the green cart composting program would be put on hold due to two of its six equipment operators in the sanitation department taking a leave of absence.
But now, residents will be able to maintain their regular collection day, with green and blue bins alternating on a bi-weekly rotation that will continue until the staffing situation is resolved. Black bins will continue to be collected on a weekly basis.

Brandon’s manager of operations, Patrick Pulak, said the city received many comments from residents after the green cart collection program was paused.
While residents can still take their recyclable or organic materials to the city’s depot and the Eastview Landfill, he said the city’s plan is to have the regular green cart program resume. He added that he expects the staffing issues will be sorted out by the end of May when those two employees return. However, he said, the city is prepared to continue the alternative program if needed.
“We have every intention of going back to the green cart program, summer operating hours,” Pulak said. “We’re just working on this particular roadblock.”
In the meantime, Pulak said the city will be making efforts to build up its skilled workforce so that more people will be trained to operate the equipment and the city can avoid a situation like the green cart program pause from happening again.
