The Thunderbird Senior Ladies 10-pin League held its windup recently and elected Marg Thompson as president for the forthcoming season. It will be her second term.

North American Lumber Mart, located on 17th Street North, one block east of the 18th Street overpass, has been officially inaugurated. It has 5,500 square feet of floor space and carries all building products, plumbing and heating lines, electrical fixtures, wall coverings, paints, floor coverings, cabinets and unfinished furniture.

About 100 people marched through city streets yesterday in a rally commemorating the sacrifices made during the spring of labour strife 75 years ago. In addition to marking the anniversary of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike and Brandon sympathy strike, the rally was also held to draw attention to the current problems of organized labour.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Assiniboine Community College and the provincial government will cook up a proposal to build a new culinary arts facility for the college by September 2005. ACC’s board passed a resolution this week to start looking for a way to move the college’s 40 culinary arts students from a kitchen the college rents from a local church into a facility of their own on campus.

The sign outside Murray Chevrolet Oldsmobile Cadillac will soon be one line shorter. The Oldsmobile is no more. After 97 years in production, the last car — an Alero — rolled off the line in Lansing, Mich., this week. General Motors announced in 2000 it would be phasing out the Oldsmobile line because of eroding sales.

TEN YEARS AGO

The City of Brandon has taken the first major step in its attempt to secure government funding for its airport redevelopment plan. Scott Hildebrand confirmed yesterday that the city’s application for the New Building Canada Fund was submitted and received by the province. The application and business case was also sent to Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Larry Maguire and his staff.
