Bruce Baker, a Neelin High School student, won the Roadeo Safety competition sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He will now go to Winnipeg to compete in the provincial competition.

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau announced Ottawa will buy two aircraft from Sauders of Gimli for $1.5 million and press them into an experimental service on the Winnipeg-Brandon and Winnipeg-Dauphin-Yorkton routes.

Burns Meats Ltd. workers cautiously pinned their hopes on the provincial government’s pledge it will fight to save their jobs at the Brandon meat-packing plant.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
The RCMP say a chemical spill on the outskirts of Neepawa yesterday was quickly cleaned up and did not present any danger to the public. A Neepawa-Gladstone Co-op truck moving some farm chemicals lost part of its load when a wooden platform came loose.
The Winnipeg Jets announced the acquisition of Sheldon Kennedy from the Detroit Red Wings.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
This month, Philip Horkey, resident care co-ordinator at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, was honoured with the Leadership Excellence Award from the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba. Horkey was nominated for the award by staff at Rideau Park, where he has worked since 1996.
TEN YEARS AGO
A hula-hooping Grade 11 student from Brandon has won a $10,000 prize on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” Christina (The Crazy Hooper) Munchinsky was one of three finalists in the Ellen, Here’s My Talent contest, in which participants get to showcase their talents on set in front of a live audience. “It was awesome and super fun to get to be on Ellen,” Muchinsky, 17, said in a phone interview from Los Angeles. “Never in a million years did I think I would be chosen when I entered. I just thought, why not try?”
In what appeared to be a daring “Mission: Impossible”- like heist, a bandit broke into a local business through its roof. The Brandon Police Service was called to Wheat City Cycle on First Street North on Thursday after it appeared a wannabe Ethan Hunt removed a concrete slab from the top of an exterior wall, peeled back a portion of the steel roof and dropped into the store sometime overnight between Wednesday and Thursday. After snaking through a hole about two feet wide, and moving a part of the dropped ceiling, the owner said the culprit must have crawled on the floor to avoid motion sensors and nabbed approximately $1,000 from the store’s cash box.
