Brandon University has named Peter Hickey as its new vice-president for administration and finance.

Hickey, who starts the job on Sept. 1, comes to BU from Toronto, where he served most recently as director of finance and administration, including time as interim chief financial officer, for the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto.

In a press release, BU said Hickey brings with him “demonstrated leadership in corporate financial and strategic planning, cost controls, risk management, treasury, system and process optimization, and team management.”

Hickey’s background spans both the public and private sectors, including more than eight years leading finance within the Ontario Child Welfare sector and various financial and supply chain leadership roles within the consumer-packaged goods sector with organizations like Maple Leaf Foods, Nestlé Canada and Kraft Canada, among others.

His experience serving on not-for-profit boards, as board director and finance chair, includes eCampus Ontario, One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre and Children’s Mental Health Ontario.

He has attained the chartered professional accountant (CPA) and chartered financial analyst (CFA) designations, as well as a master of business administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and a commerce degree from Laurentian University.

Hickey grew up and spent significant time in northern Ontario, in the Sudbury and North Bay areas, and said the opportunity to return to a smaller centre was appealing.

“Within a smaller centre, you have the ability to become more fully involved and to build strong community connections, something my family and I truly value and appreciate,” Hickey said. “Everyone at Brandon University has been incredibly welcoming during my visits, and I am looking forward to getting to know the faculty and staff in the fall, and to truly integrating into the Brandon community.”

BU president David Docherty said Hickey will provide high-level oversight of the university’s financial and registration services, business operations, physical plant, and workplace safety and health.

“Peter’s wealth and range of experience stand out, and Brandon University will benefit from his deep insight gained from a variety of sectors,” Docherty said. “I am equally impressed by his eagerness to engage with the campus, and I know he will soon become an invaluable member of our community.”

Hickey assumes the position left vacant by the departure of Scott Lamont, who retired at the end of June after 30 years at BU.
