The provincial government has officially put out a tender for the reconstruction of almost three kilometres of 18th Street in Brandon, with documents revealing it wants the work done by the beginning of October.
The pothole-ridden street was named Manitoba’s worst road by CAA Manitoba earlier this year.
The work out for tender involves the reconstruction of 2.8 kilometres of 18th Street from Rosser Avenue, just south of the Daly Overpass, to Aberdeen Avenue, just south of Canadian Tire.
Reconstruction had originally been scheduled for next year, but the province has committed to getting it done earlier as long as the City of Brandon finishes underground repairs to water lines along 18th Street early enough.
Tender documents state that if the Oct. 1 deadline is not met, the winning bidder will be charged a $2,000 fee per day. If the work isn’t complete by Oct. 31, a $50,000 charge will be levied.
However, a seasonal shutdown date has been set for Oct. 15.
During construction, the contractor will be required to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction at all times.
“During shutdown periods and between sunset and sunrise, traffic shall be returned to four-lane operation, unless milled surfaces are present.”
Construction will not be allowed to take place on statutory or civic holidays, long weekends or between sunset and sunrise.
On top of that, the contractor must co-ordinate with CN Rail if any blocks are needed on the rail tracks that cross 18th Street and will be required to cover all of CN’s associated costs.
Bids for the tender close at 2 p.m. on July 26.
The City of Brandon did not respond to a request for a progress update on its 18th Street work. However, the tender for the city’s work stated that it wanted the work finished by July 31.
Currently, only one lane of traffic is open in each direction on parts of 18th Street as the city’s work proceeds.
