Sobeys Brandon South had to close its doors to customers on Monday morning due to a refrigeration system failure. The store reopened in the afternoon.

In a statement shared via social media on Monday afternoon, Sobeys said there would be some limitations as staff work to address the incident’s aftermath.

“We are going to reopen the store, with some limitations, unfortunately. Our meat department has to re-wrap all of their product due to condensation damage,” the store said.

“Other departments may be a tad behind due to having to reproduce certain products, that had to be discarded. We assure everyone that the building and product are 100 per cent safe! We appreciate your patience during this and bear with us as we get up to our regular standards.”

Just after 8 a.m. on Monday, the store reported a compressor leak that led to the malfunction, prompting the fire department to conduct a safety assessment and evacuate all staff and customers as a precaution.

“Everyone is safe!! All staff are back in the building, but refrigeration remains down. We hope to be up and running in a few hours,” the store posted on social media.

The fire department’s swift response and comprehensive safety assessment, the company added, ensured no lingering hazards, “allowing Sobeys staff to focus on restoring normal operations.”

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Doug Wheatland said the fire department received a call about the incident at 8:07 a.m. and cleared the scene by 9:22 a.m., adding his primary concern was to ensure the safety of everyone in the store.

“Our team wanted to make sure it was safe for everybody to proceed, so we conducted some ventilation of the area,” Wheatland told the Sun.

“After the ventilation, Gateway Mechanical began repairs on the compressor leak. When we left, everything was fine in terms of the environment for them to work in. Atmospherically, there was no danger or threat.”

Sobeys spokesperson Tshani Jaja said the store could not respond to the Sun’s request for comments due to the “tight deadline.”

“We are still conducting our assessments and will share details with you once they are completed,” she said.
