With four Baseball Manitoba provincials and two qualifiers scheduled this past weekend, only the 11U AA Brandon returned home with gold medals around their necks.
Playing in East Selkirk with 10 team involved, Brandon went 4-0 in its pool with victories over red River Red 5-0, Reston 12-0, Red River Blue 5-4 and St. James 7-0.
Advancing to Sunday’s semifinals during the three-day provincial tournament, Brandon advanced to the final by crushing South Central 12-3.
In the championship game for provincial bragging rights, Brandon edged Red River Red 4-3.
In Altona for the 18U AA provincials featuring 10 teams, Brandon went 1-3 in round-robin play during the three-day tournament.
Carillon would go on to win gold after dispatching Morden 13-2 in the final.
Brandon edged the host team 6-5 in the game for ninth-place bragging rights.
Brandon opened play with a 22-0 to the eventual provincial champion Carillon, then dropped a 17-6 decision to North Winnipeg.
On Day 2, Brandon defeated Bonivital 5-3, then lost 11-4 to Elmwood.
In the two qualifying tournaments for 13U and 15U AAA teams, the Brandon Marlins advanced to provincials in Seine River after going 4-2 in a seven-team event hosted in Stonewall.
The Marlins opened Day 1 with a 17-7 win over Midwest, then bounced Oildome 17-5. On Day 2, Brandon dropped back-to-back games, losing 11-9 to Pembina Hills and were skunked 10-0 by South Central.
On Day 3, the Marlins returned to their winning ways by crushing Carillon 22-0, then bounced Interlake 13-8.
In Glenbora at the 15U AAA qualifying tournament featuring seven teams, the Brandon Marlins went 3-3 playing under muggy and humid conditions to qualify for Tier 2 provincials being hosted by St. James.
Brandon opened play with back-to-back wins on Day 1, downing Oildome 14-5 and Midwest 12-3.
Day 2 was a different story, as the Marlins were swept in two games by Carillon 12-2 and Interlake 15-8.
It was a mixed finish on Day 3, with the Marlins blanking Pembina Hills 4-0 in the early morning, but they being crushed by the top team South Central 17-6 during the supper hour.
South Central finished 6-0, outscoring its opponents 86-14. Carillon finished second overall with a 5-1 record, its only loss a 3-2 setback to South Central.
Key to the South Central’s strength during three days of play was the heavy bat of six-foot-four utility player Austin Harder, who smacked a homer against the Marlins, and crushed two in a 25-3 win over Oildome.
There were two senior provincials on the same weekend, A in Hamiota and AA in Morden.
