Hey there, time traveller!

Planet Kia in Brandon has announced plans to more than double the size of the dealership at 415 18th St. North.
Co-owner Mike Plante told the Sun the company had chosen Horizon Builders as its contractor to handle the project, estimated to cost more than $4 million.
“The new expansion will transform the current setup, creating a much larger showroom and a new, modern parts and service area,” Plante said Wednesday. “Right now, we have a six-bay shop and around 6,000 square feet of space. After the expansion, we’ll have an eight-bay shop and nearly 13,000 square feet.”

This, he said, will allow the dealership to serve more customers efficiently and accommodate a growing number of employees.
Plante, who relocated from The Pas to Brandon in 2002 to buy the dealership, explained the project is not only about increasing physical space but also about integrating new technologies to streamline operations and enhance the customer experience.
“We’re always trying to balance digital and personal interactions,” he said. “While many customers prefer online booking and electronic signatures, we will maintain a personal touch by keeping a human receptionist available for those who prefer to call.”
Another feature of the new facility will be a drive-through service reception area, addressing the inconvenience of Manitoba’s harsh winters.
“Customers won’t have to step outside in minus-40-degree weather.”
Despite the promising outlook, the expansion comes with its set of challenges.
The biggest challenge, he said, is operating during the construction.
“We might need to set up mobile offices to ensure we continue serving our customers without interruption,” Plante said. “We are also working closely with Manitoba Hydro to upgrade electrical infrastructure and install fast chargers for EVs.”
The project’s timeline is contingent on various factors, including the completion of preliminary tasks such as moving hydro lines and seasonal considerations.
“We’re pushing hard to start this year, but if not, it will be in the spring. We expect the entire project to take about two years,” he said.
Originally located on the south side of town, the dealership moved to its current site in 2010 and expanded in 2015 to accommodate increasing demand and changes in the automotive industry.
