Around 50 people gathered in Brandon’s Dinsdale Park for the Westman Ultimate Disc League’s first-ever family day barbecue event on Sunday afternoon.

Families showed up to learn how to play ultimate frisbee and disc golf as well as other frisbee-based mini-games like dodgebee — a variant of dodgeball played using a soft frisbee.

League president Jody Behrens said the goal was to get people of all ages playing disc-related sports.

“I do play ultimate frisbee here in Brandon, and what I really love about that sport is the spirit of it,” she said. “It is a very friendly, welcoming atmosphere. All skill types are welcome.”

The league was first founded in 2007.

This past year, Behrens said the league has been trying to generate interest in its youth league for ultimate frisbee.

Typically, the league plays drop-in games at Linden Lanes School and official league games at Christian Heritage School. To learn more about the league, visit its Facebook page or its website, wudl.ca.
