A woman who grew up in Brandon sea cadets has become the command chief warrant officer for Canada’s air force.

Renee Hansen was appointed on Wednesday to the senior enlisted position in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Her appointment follows a career of service, including being deployed to Afghanistan twice.

Hansen’s new role puts her as an adviser on matters related to dress, discipline, morale and welfare, and quality of life, the Government of Canada says on its website. She adopts responsibilities such as understanding issues that personnel face, and identifying and mentoring others to achieve senior positions. She acts as an adviser to the commander of the air force.

The Sun made a request to speak with Hansen, but air force public affairs said she will not be available until October.

During her upbringing in Brandon, she was “a very good cadet,” says her former sea cadet commander, George Haggerty. He was her commander in the late ’80s.

Thinking back to the time they knew each other, Haggerty recalls a point the two were at a cross. Hansen wanted to remain guard commander — but as her commander, he pushed her to try another role and get new experience.

“We had tears over that one,” he told the Sun over the phone. “I said, ‘Just hang on. You’ll get something somewhere. Don’t worry. Just trust me.’”

Her appointment is “very prestigious” and she’s “done very well for herself” over the years, he said.

Hansen is a wife, a mother and grandmother in addition to her service in the military. She has ascended a series of promotions over the years, and was posted five years in Shilo starting 2004. During that time, she was deployed to Afghanistan twice.

Her former cadet commander sees it as no surprise she’s found success in Canada’s forces.

“The only thing that I can remember is she was a very keen cadet. You know, things had to be just so.”
