WASAGAMING — Gene Hodgson nearly didn’t make it into the Tamarack.
After winning the senior men’s championship flight over top seed George Sheard on Saturday, he’s certainly glad he did.
“I was on a waiting list until Thursday,” Hodgson said with a chuckle. “The seniors only had eight to start with, which is absolutely ridiculous. It used to be 32 and sometimes more, but this year there were 13 entrants so they had a waiting list, and I was fifth on the waiting list.

“I had played quite a bit because I was going to go to Tamarack and I wanted to be good, and then it was ‘I’m not going,” because I was on the waiting list. However, my son and my daughter and my grandson and my grandson’s girlfriend were in, so I was ‘OK, I didn’t get in but I can watch them. Then I got in too so it was a busy week.”
Hodgson got his chance when eight more golfers were added to the senior’s division; He shot 86 in qualifying to finish third.
He topped sixth-ranked Gerald Ehnes and second-ranked John Paddock en route to the final, while Sheard posted an 82 to finish first in qualifying, and beat eighth-ranked Melvin Montgomery and fourth-ranked Larrie Kidd.
Hodgson has played in the event for six or seven years, and has won the senior’s crown once before, in 2018.
“It was wonderful,” Hodgson said. “It was quite surprising today. I like the idea of getting as much golf as I can so I got my fourth round in today, and I thought, this guy beat everybody that he played so I thought I was probably going to lose. It didn’t work out that way. I played a little better and won.”
Hodgson took an early lead on the first hole on Saturday at Clear Lake Golf Course and went 2 up on four. Sheard tied it by the ninth hole, so the back nine proved to be the difference as he emerged with a 3-and-2 victory.
“People told me I played better than usual,” Hodgson said. “I was just consistent, had it in play and made a couple of putts.”
As it turned out, his family had a lot of success. His son Dylan won the sixth flight consolation and his grandson Rylan took the fourth flight consolation.
Hodgson, who grew up in Quebec and has Manitoba family, lives in Kelowna, B.C. With relatives also coming out from Alberta to play, the Tamarack has become a family holiday.
“It was a wonderful week,” Hodgson said. “The place is great, the whole family thing really worked because my whole family was there.”
