The number of crimes in Brandon reported to police so far this year is down compared to last, according to the Brandon Police Service.

The force’s October edition of its monthly report shows it has handled fewer Criminal Code violations so far this year compared to the same time in 2023. A total of 5,931 violations were recorded by the department as of October compared to 6,030 last year, a decrease of two per cent.

The most commonly reported type of crime in Brandon was property crime, which has logged 2,883 reports (49 per cent of all violations).

That was followed by “other Criminal Codes,” which can include weapons and breaching probation, with 1,862 violations (31 per cent).

Crimes against persons was the third most common in the city, making up about 17 per cent of total violations so far this year. This category is primarily made up of assaults and violent offences, of which there were 650 this year so far (just over two per day).

Property crime was led by theft under $5,000, with 1,221 cases so far, compared to 1,203 last year. There have been fewer break and enters, as 267 were reported compared to 310 at this time in 2023.

The year-over-year drop in reported crime came mostly from property crime. Compared to last year, Brandon police have seen this category decrease from 3,056 to 2,883 (six per cent).

In general, more charges have been laid for trafficking and possessing drugs, with 69 charges laid for trafficking this year (41 by this point last year), and 48 for possession (36 in 2023).

There have been zero homicides compared to four at this time last year. The number of assaults and violent offences has remained steady, increasing by just two percent to 650 from 636.
