CN rail officer arrested

An officer with the Canadian National Police Service faces drunk driving charges after Blue Hills RCMP received a report of an erratic driver on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Brandon on Nov. 6.

The person who called the RCMP to report the driver advised that the suspect vehicle was a marked police SUV and that he was concerned about the driver.

RCMP say the caller followed the suspect vehicle for a short period of time before losing sight of it on the Trans-Canada Highway. With the information provided by the caller, RCMP identified the vehicle as belonging to the CN Police — a private railway police force that protects the property, personnel and the rail infrastructure of the Canadian National Railway.

RCMP officers located the suspect vehicle at a residence in Brandon, where the 42-year-old male driver, a CN police officer, was arrested for impaired driving. He was taken to the Blue Hills RCMP detachment, where he provided samples of his breath suitable for analysis that were found to be over twice the legal limit.

The CN Police officer, who was on duty at the time of the driving complaint, will be facing impaired driving charges in relation to the incident. An RCMP report states the suspect was released from custody for a court appearance scheduled for Jan. 2, 2025, in Brandon Provincial Court.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba was notified the day of the arrest and are monitoring the investigation.

Arrest warrants

Brandon police dealt with four different arrest warrants on Nov. 14, all within a four-hour window.

The first was a breach of recognizance at 10:15 a.m. BPS responded to the 300 block of Louise Avenue to find a 31-year-old man on an endorsed warrant of arrest. He was located and later released on an appearance notice, with a court date of Nov. 19.

At 10:30 a.m., police went to a hotel on the 1500 block of Highland Avenue, where they found and arrested a 63-year-old man on an unendorsed warrant of arrest. He was held in a detention cell for a scheduled court date on Friday morning.

In the third instance, officers went to the 1500 block of Third Street and found a 34-year-old man on an unendorsed warrant. He was arrested and held in a detention cell for court the next morning.

And while conducting a pedestrian stop in the 700 block of Sixth Street at around 1:35 p.m. Thursday, police arrested a 38-year-old woman on two unendorsed warrants. She was held in a detention cell for court on Friday morning.

Disobeying court order

A 38-year-old man surrendered at the Brandon Police Service station on Thursday after disobeying a court order made earlier in the month.

On Nov. 2, the man was in the front yard of a residence on the 800 block of Rosser Avenue talking with his kids. He had been bound by a court order on Nov. 2 not to attend the address and not to communicated with the kids unless supervised.

After turning himself in, he was later released on an appearance notice with a court date of Jan. 20, 2025.

Structure fire

Brandon police were called to a fire on the 8000 block of Richmond Avenue East shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday.

The fire was determined to be a dryer in a separate building with no risk to the other main buildings. The blaze produced a lot of smoke, but Brandon Fire and Emergency Services got it under control. The fire was not deemed suspicious in nature, and there were no reported injuries.
