Assiniboine College will offer an accelerated Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma program in Brandon starting on Jan. 7, 2025.
The accelerated mentorship program combines classroom learning with practical experience, offering students two days of classes per week and three days of hands-on work at an early learning centre.
The “earn while you learn” approach helps students build real-world skills while advancing their education and graduates will complete the program and receive their ECE diploma in just 18 months, Assiniboine stated in a press release issued Tuesday.

The release stated that classes for the program are located at the Victoria Avenue East campus, but students may be employed at any early learning centre or seek employment upon starting the program.
Karen Hargreaves, dean of the School of Health and Human Services at Assiniboine, said applications for the program are open, with spaces still available.
“This program is an excellent choice for anyone considering a career in early childhood education, regardless of their prior experience in the field,” Hargreaves said. “We’re proud to offer this in Brandon, Winnipeg and Morden in 2025 so that ECE educators living in those communities and regions have an opportunity to advance their career in early learning close to home.”
The program in Brandon is part of an $11.4-million investment by the provincial and federal governments to expand Early Childhood Education (ECE) training at Assiniboine.
Students interested in the program may be eligible for financial support, including a $5,000 tuition reimbursement from the Province of Manitoba. This means students can not only earn while they learn, but may also have their tuition fully covered, the release added.
Early learning centres that hire new employees to join the program, the releases said, may qualify for a provincial staff replacement grant, making this initiative a valuable opportunity for both students and employers.
“This increased investment in early childhood learning is an important step in increasing access to this training and encouraging new people to enter and stay working in this field. A career in ECE is not only fulfilling, but also an important piece of our social and economic fabric,” said Hargreaves.
