Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School’s music students took to the stage on Saturday afternoon for a festive holiday concert at The Green Spot, sharing their talents with an enthusiastic community audience.

The event, which featured a variety of performances from the school’s choirs and bands, aimed to bring together families and community members in the spirit of the season.

Clint McLachlan, a music teacher at Crocus Plains and conductor of the school’s vocal programs, told the Sun the event created a platform for students to showcase their hard work.

“It’s just a nice program for families to come out and hear what we’ve been working on this semester,” he said in an interview. “We’ve been diving into different jazz repertoires with the vocal jazz group, and it’s a great opportunity for our students to perform in front of a live audience, especially in such a warm and inviting space like The Green Spot.”

The performance featured the vocal jazz group, one of the three choirs McLachlan oversees at Crocus Plains. The group of 20 students, dressed in the school’s maroon and gold colours, delivered a mix of vocal stylings and jazz repertoire, delighting the audience with their harmonies and energy.

“It’s amazing to have the opportunity to perform in a venue like this, and Bernie at The Green Spot has been incredibly generous in allowing us to host this free concert for families and the community,” McLachlan added.

The afternoon also showcased performances by the school’s band program.

Anna Penno, the Crocus Plains and Neelin Band Program coordinator, told the Sun that community performances are very important for her students.

“It’s a great experience for the students to perform in a setting like this, where they can connect with the community,” Penno said. “This is our 10th year performing here, and it’s always a highlight that students and families look forward to every year.”

Penno’s jazz band performed as part of the concert, adding a lively and festive touch to the event.

“We love the opportunity for students to get experience playing in the community. This is a beautiful, uplifting setting, especially around the holidays,” she said.

The event drew about 70 people, with most seats filled as families and community members gathered to enjoy the music.

“We usually don’t have any seats left, and it’s always a full house,” Penno noted. “The energy is amazing, and it’s great to see such support for our students and the arts.”
