• 60 YEARS AGO — Waskada Comets captured their second one-goal decision of the young SouthWest Hockey League schedule by defeating Brandon College Caps 6-5. Waskada scattered their goals among Wayne Adams, Don Adams, Moe Mark, Jim McKinney, Bill Hainsworth and Bill Payne (coach). Jim Spence had three assists.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Brandon native Gary Ridge, now living in Swan River, recently won the honour of being Manitoba’s best trapshooter. Ridge qualified as captain of the First All-Manitoba Trap Team, with an average of 91.12.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Judith Friesen got her first taste of varsity action in the Brandon High School Basketball League when she hauled down 14 rebounds and added 12 points to lead the Vincent Massey Vikings to a 47-36 victory over the visiting Crocus Plainsmen.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Jed Crumb and Jeff Temple both scored twice to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to an 8-4 victory over the Eastman Selects in a Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League game.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Lawrence Daniel of Hamiota is the first skip to earn a spot in the Meyers Norris Penny Provincial Mixed Curling Championship next year. Daniel went undefeated through the Zone 3 playdowns, beating Ken Lawn of Hamiota 10-6 in the A-final and Darcy Hayward of Miniota 9-2 in the B-final.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Even when the Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings weren’t at their best, their goaltender was. Josh Petersen made 27 saves as the Wheat Kings blanked the Southwest Cougars 3-0 in a Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League game at the Canada Games Sportsplex.
