BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (24-4-2) earned a victory against the Parkland Rangers at Dauphin’s Credit Union Centre in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Friday, Noah Smigelsky gave Parkland an early lead but Reid Nicol, Cole Dupuis, Jaxson Brick, Konner MacKay, Joe Balabanski and Nolan Saunderson replied for Brandon in a 7-2 victory.

Dayson Martin had the other Rangers goal. Saunderson and Jonah Lemoine each had three assists.

Matthew Michta made 24 saves for Brandon, with Piet Mierau blocking 38 shots for Parkland.

The Wheat Kings next see action on Wednesday when Parkland visits J&G Homes Arena on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., in their only game next week.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The fourth-place Cougars (19-8-5) had a tough return from Christmas against the second-place Winnipeg Bruins (24-4-1) and Parkland.

On Sunday evening, Dayson Martin, Cade Legaarden and Carter Moncrief scored in the first 11 minutes of the third period as Parkland earned a 3-2 victory. Brock Hutchison and Lynden Gould scored for Southwest.

Brodie Cameron made 25 saves for Southwest, with Piet Mierau turning aside 45 shots for Parkland.

On Saturday at the Southdale Community Centre, Aiden Jacobson scored 3:12 into overtime as the Bruins earned a 3-2 victory. Kole Beard scored both of Southwest’s goals, with one coming shorthanded and the other on the power play.

Micky Gross 36 saves for Southwest, with Zak Matheson blocking 24 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars next head to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to meet the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 13th-place Chiefs (4-23-1) split a pair of games against the sixth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (16-3-2) at Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday afternoon, Riley Swereda had Yellowhead’s lone goal as they fell 4-1. Connor Rapley made 55 saves for Yellowhead, with Tate Barnaby blocking 34 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Grady McNish, Redden Richmond and Winston Lepp gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead, the Thrashers made it 3-2 and then Alec Strachan scored a short-handed empty netter with 16 seconds remaining.

Rapley made 50 saves for Yellowhead, with Hudson Hunnie and Barnaby combining to block 43 shots for Winnipeg.

The Chiefs visit Dauphin’s Credit Union Place to meet Parkland on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., and then host the Kenora Thistles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The eighth-place Rangers (17-13-0) met Brandon and Southwest.

The Rangers have a busy four-game week ahead.

They host the Chiefs on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., head to J&G Homes Arena to play the Wheat Kings on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., travel to Winnipeg’s Seven Oaks Community Centre to meet the Thrashers on Saturday at 7 p.m., and hit the highway to Teulon-Rockwood Arena to skate against the Interlake Lightning on Sunday at 2 p.m.

GIRLS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The seventh-place Wheat Kings (7-10-1) met the second-place Eastman Selects (19-1-2), the eighth-place Central Plains Capitals (4-16-3) and the ninth-place Interlake Lightning (2-16-3) as they returned to action in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday at the J&G Homes Arena, the Wheat Kings were routed 7-0 by the Selects, who received 13 saves from Addison Tomes in the shutout victory. Danica Averill stopped 46 shots for Brandon.

On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, Jordan Bell, Paige Crossley and Quinn Twordik scored as the Wheat Kings earned a 3-1 victory over the Capitals. Shannon Hees made 21 saves for Brandon, while Elyse Denbow stopped 40 shots.

On Friday at Warren’s South Interlake Rec Centre, Sydney Sass scored the lone goal of the game 5:35 into the second period as Brandon won 1-0 over Interlake. Averill made 40 saves for Brandon in the shutout victory, while her counterpart Orieanna Kennedy stopped 29 shots for Interlake.

The Wheat Kings have a home-and-home series with the Chiefs next weekend, with Friday’s game at the Shoal Lake Communiplex at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday’s game at J&G Homes Arena. Brandon then hosts Interlake on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The fourth-place Chiefs (13-8-1) earned five points during a busy weekend that included a game against the third-place Winnipeg Ice (13-4-2).

On Sunday afternoon at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, Presley Hodson, Emma Pollock, Callee Despiegelaere and Rose Cochrane scored and Clair Merckx made 42 saves in a 4-1 Yellowhead victory over Interlake. Orieanna Kennedy made 35 saves for Interlake.

On Saturday at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre, Aliyah Teixeira scored the only goal in the shootout as the Ice earned a 3-2 victory. Erica Miko and Kirby Gray scored the goals for the Chiefs.

Merckx made 38 saves plus two in the shootout for Yellowhead, while Bailey Grunewald stopped 30 shots plus all three in the shootout for Winnipeg.

On Friday at Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community, Callee Despiegelaere had a pair of goals and Tara Knight and Kirby Gray also sniped in a 4-1 Yellowhead victory over Central Plains. Gracie Johnston made 23 saves for Yellowhead, with Elyse Denbow of Central Plains turning aside 45 shots.

The Chiefs have the home-and-home series with the Wheat Kings next weekend.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fifth-place Wildcats (9-10-2) hosted games against Eastman and the sixth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (9-13-1) at Hartney Arena.

On Sunday, Reese Schutte, Katie Bell and Callie Hilhorst scored as the Wildcats earned a 3-1 victory. Indigo Stone made 15 saves for Westman, with Madison Froese stopping 35 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Saturday, Eastman goalie Isabelle Labossiere was called on to make just 11 saves and Eastman scored four times in the second period in a 6-0 Selects shutout. Kylie Hack made 33 saves for Westman.

The Wildcats head out on the road on the weekend, meeting Pembina Valley at Morden’s Access Events Centre on Friday at 7:45 p.m., and visiting the Niverville Recreation Centre to skate against Eastman on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
