• 60 YEARS AGO — Thirteen vie for Sportsman of the Year Award. They are: Charlie McKenzie, Ron Dietrich, Vailla Hoggan, Lynda Kidd, Mike Sheridan, John Vopni, Ivan Carlisle, Dave Bender, Gerry Clark, Dallas Smith, Bob Ash, Gerry MacKay, and Bruce Gullet.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Dave LeBoutillier paced the Minnedosa Bombers attack against the Russell Rams with three goals while Cliff McKague added two. Frank Taylor, Don Sangster and Brian Bruce notched singles.
• 40 YEARS AGO — David Haney and Sheldon Fleury both scored twice to help St-Lazare Blazers thump host Birtle Blazers 11-5 in a NorthCentral Hockey League game. Dan Lemoine and Carl Haney had two goals apiece for the winners, while Raymond Fouillard added a single.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Daryl Stockham scored twice to spark the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-4 win over the Pembina Valley Hawks in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League action. Brent Kyle, Laird Laluk and David Newman also scored for the Wheat Kings.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Kaileigh Strath of Souris has clinched first place in her pool with one draw left at the provincial junior curling championships at the Brandon Curling Club. Strath, seeded third on the junior women’s side, has the only undefeated team in the field, sitting at 6-0 after beating second-seeded Alli Nimik of Winnipeg’s Victoria club 8-5 and Heather Pierson of the Granite club 8-6.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Hartney’s Melissa Hunt set up Lindsay Agnew’s second-period marker for Canada as it dumped the Czech Republic 7-1 at the world under-18 women’s hockey championship in Buffalo, N.Y.
