The Brandon School Division (BSD) notified parents Wednesday about a cybsersecurity event in late December, resulting in some of its PowerSchool data having been accessed.

In an email sent late on Wednesday night, the division said it was notified about the incident by PowerSchool — its Student Information System (SIS) provider. It further clarified that PowerSchool, and not BSD, was the target of the cybersecurity event, and that it is working with PowerSchool to ensure the integrity and stability of its data going forward.

Addressing concerns about the safety and security of student data, BSD said it regrets the incident having occurred and is actively working with security experts to monitor the situation. Following the incident, PowerSchool said it has deactivated accounts and initiated enhanced processes for passwords and access. It has also assured customers that the accessed data has now been deleted, and is confident that the data was not copied or uploaded elsewhere. It continues to actively engage with cybersecurity professionals to monitor the event.

“It is our commitment to you to continue to communicate. As we learn more, we will be in touch with you, and our community. Communication will also be posted on our website and a process to ask questions will be identified,” BSD stated in the email.

PowerSchool customers across Canada and the United States have been impacted by the incident, including Brandon School Division.
