Choirs from Brandon University (BU) and the University of Regina (U of R) will come together for a choral concert scheduled for 2 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Knox United Church, located at 451 18th St.

The Brandon University Chorale and the University of Regina’s Choir will jointly present A Choral Celebration, featuring songs from each choir, as well as selections from composers, such as J. Brahms, Frank Martin, Glenn Gould and Andrew Balfour.

A string quartet of master’s students from Brandon University’s School of Music will join the BU Chorale.

The performance will also feature BU student composer, Philip Lauter, in a composition called “Moonlight,” which has become the choir’s and an audience favourite, according to a BU news release.

This is only the second time that the BU Chorale has hosted another university choir, but it has shared rehearsals with peer students on three continents. In 2017, the Chamber Choir from North Dakota State University in Fargo collaborated with BU choral ensembles.

The choir directors from the two Prairie universities are BU’s Andrée Dagenais and Melissa Morgan from U of R.

“Making music with peers from a different university is a rare occasion,” said Dagenais, adding: “to spend a weekend in rehearsals together is an opportunity for students to sharpen their skills and network.”

BU’s Chorale is a chamber choir consisting of voice majors and instrumentalists in performance, music education and research programs.

Some past achievements of the ensemble include performing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, at the Winnipeg New Music Festival, with BU Orchestra, Brandon Chamber Players, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Musica Intima and Spirit Sand Singers.

The group has toured North Dakota, northwestern Ontario, the Baltic countries, Cuba and France. In 2016, BU Choral was selected to perform at the National Choral Conference, Podium, in Edmonton, Alta.

The U of R’s Morgan is also a choral conductor, educator, speaker and vocalist from Regina. She is the department head of music and director of choral activities at the Faculty of Media, Arts, and Performance at the university.

Her choirs have performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City and at Cadogan Hall in London, England.

Admission for the concert is $15 for adults, $5 for those aged 13 to 18, no charge for 12 years of age and under, and no charge for students of the BU Conservatory of Music. Tickets are available at the door.
