A Minnedosa curling tournament that raises money for cancer scheduled for February is on track to break the $100,000 fundraising mark since starting six years ago.

Curling for a Cure Funspiel is set to roll Feb. 14-16 at the Minnedosa Curling Club. Organizer Chad Yanchycki told the Sun in a phone call that the fundraising goal this year is set for $30,000 and will be raised by things like raffles, silent auctions and teams that pay to register.

“Last year we raised just over $33,000,” said Yanchycki. “So we’ve kept it at that same goal. We don’t want to be unrealistic.”

Coming back for its sixth year, the event was booked full of teams within about a week, Yanchycki said. The majority of the 24 teams are returning players from the year before.

The annual event has raised a total of $94,551 since it began.

“It just goes towards helping families get through that really tough time,” he said of cancer diagnoses. “Our big thing is, we really want to make sure the funds are going towards the patients in some way.”

He said he and his family decided to direct funding towards the local program in Neepawa, as well as the Candlelighters program as it was recommended by a local family who dealt with cancer.

Darcy Bialas, who has curled in the event every year since it started, said he comes back for the cause.

“I feel everyone in some way, shape or form has been touched by cancer,” said Bialas. “This bonspiel here isn’t about winning or losing, it’s about raising money for a cause. And in the end, I truly feel that everybody wins.”

He said the No. 1 reason he takes part is that he wants humanity to find a cure to cancer. Fundraising and showing support is one way to support that along the way.

Bialas said the event’s growth has been significant since he attended in year one, and attributed that to the commitment from organizers.

“You can definitely tell their heart and soul is in this bonspiel,” he said. “In return they are getting lots of support from southwest Manitoba.”

Yanchycki told the Sun the event started for his grandfather Nick Melnyk, who had battled cancer three times over a lifetime. The final diagnosis was terminal, and the family set out to fundraise in Melnyk’s name.

“We went to see him when we realized how much we raised, I remember going to see him. He was not doing well, and we told him how much we raised, and he was crying.”

Yanchycki said his grandfather passed away three days after they wrapped up the first event, which raised about $3,400. Now, he said the event has done so much more, yet his grandfather never got to see it.

He encouraged everyone to come out and enjoy the event.
