A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged in the Birdtail Sioux First Nation (BSFN) by Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) after complaints of him sexually assaulting a minor came to light back in September of last year.

According to a media release from MFNP on Tuesday, the accused has been formally charged with three counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual interference, one count of luring a child by telephone and seven counts of breaching his probationary conditions.

MFNP’s Criminal Investigation Unit confirmed that the accused began a relationship with a 14-year-old female.

The press release also confirmed the man initiated the relationship by sending messages from his phone, and during MFNP’s investigation, officers discovered evidence of sexual relations between him and the child.

MFNP added it used search warrants to enter the accused’s residence in Birdtail Sioux, where multiple electronic devices were found and seized. Another warrant was issued to acquire DNA samples from the accused, but further details about his identity have not been made public in an effort to protect the victim.

The investigators concluded their report by stating that the accused had been taken into custody, but has since been released by the court with conditions until his next scheduled appearance.
